UCAR Update

FEBRUARY 2019

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK

This week, Everette Joseph took the helm as the new Director of NCAR. It is a pleasure to welcome him and the vision and leadership he brings to the national center.

Everette comes onboard when NCAR's sponsor, the National Science Foundation, is recovering from the partial federal government shutdown, which saw the foundation close from December 22 - January 25. During that time voices from across our community provided vital information about the multiple and seriously detrimental impacts of science agency furloughs on our observing, research, teaching, and technology transfer efforts. Many of us highlighted the risks to the nation’s forecasting and hazard readiness while colleagues at the National Weather Service and across the rest of NOAA and the other federal agencies did their best to minimize the damage. NCAR science and the UCAR consortium were also represented in numerous interviews, including with Nature, Wired, Scientific American, and Eos.

NCAR’s strategic planning process looking ahead to 2020-2024 is underway and some of you may have attended the town halls at AGU and AMS focused on that. Everette, who attended the AMS town hall as part of his participation at that meeting, is now leading the planning process. To review the slides from the town halls and provide your feedback, please visit the NCAR Strategic Plan website.

NCAR recently announced a new program for early career faculty in the social sciences or in STEM fields outside NCAR's core expertise. The Early Career Faculty Innovator Program seeks applicants to co-develop interdisciplinary research projects in partnership with scientists and engineers at NCAR. Please see the Opportunities section, below, for details.

CISL is now accepting large-scale requests (for more than 400,000 core-hours) from university-based researchers for the 5.34-petaflops Cheyenne supercomputer and the Casper data analysis and visualization cluster. Please review the allocation instructions before preparing requests, which are due by March 5.

Early Career Faculty Innovator Program

NCAR Advanced Study Program (ASP)

This new program invites early career faculty in the social sciences or in STEM fields outside NCAR's core expertise to co-develop interdisciplinary research projects in partnership with scientists and engineers at NCAR.
