Ties that bind: Britain buys £46m of Israeli military equipment and stations troops in Israel (Declassified UK)

Britain’s deepening military relationship with Israel comes under scrutiny as details emerge from Declassified UK’s information requests. David Cronin reports:

"Britain’s armed forces are an important customer for Elbit, details obtained by Declassified show. The MOD has placed eight orders worth almost £46-million with the company since 2018."

"Between January and March this year, the British government approved 24 arms export licences for Israel, including components for a range of equipment such as assault rifles, pistols, combat helicopters, warplanes, radars, tanks and submarines. Just two applications for military sales to Israel were refused in that period."

"The British government revealed in 2018 that it was providing military training to Israel. Declassified has now found that Britain provided two training courses to Israeli military officers in Britain in 2019."

"Last year the Israeli military flew F-15 warplanes alongside Britain’s Typhoon jets in a training exercise hosted by the Royal Air Force in Britain. Israel has used such F-15s – supplied by the US – in its attacks on Gaza."
COVID-19 Emergency Situation Report 19 (22 September – 5 October 2020) (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs)
  • "Over 6,000 new COVID-19 cases recorded in the oPt, but active cases decline significantly; 88 more people die.
  • 1,000 more cases of community transmission, and another six fatalities reported in Gaza.
  • The general lockdown is extended in both the West Bank and Israel, which also includes annexed East Jerusalem.
  • The Inter-Agency Response Plan for the oPt is 47 per cent funded."
The real winners in the Israel-UAE deal? Arms dealers (+972 Magazine)

Sahar Vardi writes: "The normalization agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates is, according to Israeli arms industry leaders, a “win-win” situation."

"The win-win-win scenario for the arms industries is much bigger than just a diplomatically negotiated market expansion, however."

"On the sidelines of the three-way agreement between Israel, the UAE, and the United States, the latter two countries struck a deal wherein the United States will sell fifth-generation American F-35 fighter jets to the Gulf state at a minimum price of $77.9 million per unit."

In the role of fifth column: Israel's ultra-Orthodox community (Haaretz)

Gideon Levy writes: "The ultra-Orthodox (Haredim) have for years been a target of secular hatred."

"Their otherness, their insulation, their strange customs and mumbling leaders, their attitude toward women, the religious coercion and particularly the fact that they don’t serve in the army (God forbid), don’t study core subjects and in many cases don’t work, fanned the fire against them."

"The hatred of them was blind, burning, exaggerated and unworthy, at times resembling antisemitism. Some of the expressions used to describe them are among the ugliest and repulsive ever heard here."
