We are Israel's largest human rights group – and we are calling this apartheid (The Guardian)

Hagai El-Ad writes: "One cannot live a single day in Israel-Palestine without the sense that this place is constantly being engineered to privilege one people, and one people only: the Jewish people."

"Yet half of those living between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea are Palestinian. The chasm between these lived realities fills the air, bleeds, is everywhere on this land."

"Although there is demographic parity between the two peoples living here, life is managed so that only one half enjoy the vast majority of political power, land resources, rights, freedoms and protections. It is quite a feat to maintain such disfranchisement."

"In fact, one government rules everyone and everything between the river and the sea, following the same organising principle everywhere under its control, working to advance and perpetuate the supremacy of one group of people – Jews – over another – Palestinians. This is apartheid."
Israel is a non-democratic apartheid regime, says rights group (The Guardian)

Oliver Holmes writes writes: "Israel is not a democracy but an “apartheid regime” that enforces Jewish supremacy over all the land it controls, a leading domestic rights group has alleged in a position paper bound to provoke fierce controversy."

“One organising principle lies at the base of a wide array of Israeli policies: advancing and perpetuating the supremacy of one group – Jews – over another – Palestinians,” said B’Tselem, an organisation that documents human rights violations."

“Israel is not a democracy that has a temporary occupation attached to it,” said the body’s executive director, Hagai El-Ad. “It is one regime between the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, and we must look at the full picture and see it for what it is: apartheid.”

"In 2017, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia became the first UN body to accuse Israel of apartheid, a crime under international law, a move that Israel’s former foreign ministry spokesperson likened to Nazi propaganda. The UN’s leadership did not support the publication of the report, which was later removed from its website."

Israel Wants to Derail Biden's Plan to Rejoin Iran Nuclear Deal (Bloomberg)

David Wainer and Ivan Levingstone write: "Israel is already plotting how to derail one of Joe Biden’s signature foreign-policy promises."

"The high-profile campaign that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu waged against the Obama administration’s nuclear deal with Iran failed to block the 2015 agreement."

"Officials are now weighing whether that sort of public crusade or behind-the-scenes engagement will be the most effective strategy with Biden, a senior Israeli official said, emphasizing that no decision has been made."

"Israel will start by sending a stream of envoys on visits to Washington, the official said, requesting anonymity to discuss private deliberations."

"Israel also has a higher-risk card up its sleeve: the potential to upend diplomatic efforts through covert operations against Iran."
Labour and antisemitism: What’s going on at the Forde inquiry? (Middle East Eye)

Richard Sanders and Peter Oborne write: "The independent investigation means that the antisemitism row won't go away for Labour Party leader Keir Starmer".

"Eight months have passed since eminent barrister Martin Forde was asked to investigate Labour’s leaked report into antisemitism."

"The report, entitled 'The work of the Labour Party's Governance and Legal Unit in relation to antisemitism, 2014-2019', was commissioned by then-general secretary Jennie Formby, an ally of Jeremy Corbyn, during the dying days of his leadership. It was leaked to the press in April 2020 after Labour Party leader Keir Starmer elected not to publish it."

"The leaked report produced a mountain of evidence which, if true, largely exonerated Corbyn of the charge that he had been complacent on antisemitism. Instead, it pointed the finger at party officials who had been among his fiercest critics."

Palestinians Take Brunt of Settlers' Anger Over Teen's Death, With Dozens of Attacks in Weeks (Haaretz)

Hagar Shezaf writes: "For the past three weeks, the mayor of Sinjil, a Palestinian town near the Shilo settlement bloc, has been opening the council offices at night to provide shelter for drivers from throughout the West Bank."

"The reason Tawafsheh has had to give shelter to drivers are the anti-police demonstrations that have been taking place every night in many West Bank locations to protest the death of Ahuvia Sandak, the teenager killed in a police car chase in December after he and his friends were suspected of throwing stones at Palestinian cars."

"During some of these protests, demonstrators threw stones at Palestinians and at the security forces. To prevent friction between the demonstrators and area residents, the police and the army block roads to Palestinian traffic, and drivers are suddenly forced to find solutions en route."

"According to Israeli defense officials, since Sandak’s death three weeks ago, there have been 27 reported instances of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, most of them stones thrown at cars with no casualties."

"Some of the violence against Palestinians had nothing to do with blocking junctions or demonstrations; they are just the kind of so-called “Price Tag” hate crimes that take place periodically."
