April 2017

Welcome to the April edition of the VicTESOL e-bulletin.

Last month we were privileged to host ‘The Praxis of TESOL Teaching’ presented by Dr Mervi Kaukko and had the opportunity to reflect, as professionals, on our own praxis. VicTESOL Professional Learning

VicTESOL Workshop
Praxis of TESOL Teaching

Presenter: Dr Mervi Kaukko
Date: 14th of February, 2017

Members can view the powerpoint presentation online by clicking here.

Session Summary
What is praxis in three words? The session began with participants identifying their understanding of praxis in 3 words, and some of the comments were “teaching in action”, “teaching practice reflection”, “current skilled learning” and “intentional teacher practice”.

Dr Kaukko presented praxis as the process of knowledge, action and reflection that is explored, understood and developed from the inside out. Big picture ideas were explored, such as "What is good education for refugees?"

The presentation concentrated on TESOL teaching from a praxis-perspective. The findings from research on teaching praxis on Finnish colleagues were compared to Australian professionals, and participants were invited to contribute to the research.

Event summary contributed by VicTESOL committee member Leah Kontos.
