Welcome back to 2016!

We have an exciting year planned for our members, with a broad range of professional learning opportunities for professionals from all sectors. We also hope to see many of you at the ACTA Conference in Perth, on from the 7th to 11th of April. 

We welcome Anne Keary from Monash University as President, Shem Macdonald as Vice-President, Robert Colla as Treasurer and April Edwards as Secretary to the Executive of our expanded committee this year.

We also welcome our new Committee Members: Jessie Sambell, Julia Lippold, Michelle Andrews and Manalini Kane.

Last but not least, we thank our returning committee members for their ongoing support to the organisation: Debra IcelyMairead Hannan, Russell Cross, Mark Melican, Kristy Collins, Liz Davidson.

Upcoming VicTESOL Events

Workshop: Language, Teaching and Citizenship Workshop

Speaker: Miriam Faine
In this talk, Miriam will raise some issues around the practice and policies of second language teaching in a time of, on the one hand, border control through language testing, and irremediable linguistic Superdiversity (Blommaert & Rampton, 2011) on the other. We will follow with a discussion of what this means for us and our professional practice.

Miriam Faine's Biography
Miriam Faine's role in the Faculty of Education in Monash is as a lecturer in the area of language, literacy, research methodology and adult education. She worked setting up the ESL program at CAE in Melbourne and was the program manager of the Migrant Women's Learning Center at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE.

VicTESOL Professional Learning Coordinator
New Part-Time Position at VicTESOL

The Professional Learning Coordinator is a new position that has been created to develop and coordinate the Professional Learning activities of the Association. The Coordinator will plan, program, promote, and evaluate VicTESOL's PL program.

Applications close on the 29th February, 2016. We encourage you to consider this position and to share it with any colleagues and throughout your networks.

The ACTA Conference is nearly here! Running from the 7th to 11th of April, aims to proposes to explore the concept of language, literacy and numeracy education as a process of exchanging ways of being.

VCE Update

Bridging EAL
The new subject Bridging EAL - Units 1 & 2 now has a study design available. This is a wonderful new subject that will assist schools in structurally offering additional support to EAL students that are entering our educational system late, whilst being able to provide them with VCE credit points. VCE EAL Teachers' Mailing List
The VCE EAL Teachers' Mailing List, created to help VCE EAL teachers who wish to ask questions and share ideas and resources, will continue to run over the holiday break. Especially designed to support the introduction of the new VCAA EAL Study Design over the next 2 years, the list can be used to ask any VCE EAL related questions.

Please consider signing up & offering your support for this VicTESOL collegiate initiative.

ACTA Update

ACTA is currently conducting a survey to ascertain the state of EAL/D programs in schools across the country. The information gleaned will be published and inform ACTA policy and advocacy work with government.

ACTA is seeking the support of state agencies to promote the survey to encourage maximum participation. The survey can be found on the ACTA site if you are interested. We encourage you to do so as all improvements to EAL/D in the schooling sector is welcomed.

TESOL International

TESOL 2016, TESOL's 50th anniversary, will be held in Baltimore, Maryland, Tuesday, 5 April, through Friday, 8 April 2016.
