Welcome to 2016
Letter from the new VicTESOL President, Anne Keary
Welcome to 2016. I am Anne Keary, the new President of VicTESOL for 2016.
First of all I would like to thank Mark Melican for his outstanding three year presidency. It was a professionally rewarding period for the Association with the hosting of the 2014 ACTA conference, the implementation of a comprehensive and vibrant professional learning program and growth in membership.
The VicTESOL AGM in December was well attended and there was a great deal of interest by attendees in joining the 2016 VicTESOL committee. Hence, we have a robust committee for 2016 and in particular I welcome new members to the committee Jessie Sambell, Julia Lippold, Michelle Andrews and Manalini Kane. I would also like to acknowledge the work of the returning members who provide a great deal of experience and knowledge to the Association.
My background is varied. Many years ago I began my teaching career as an early childhood teacher, working in mainstream and Indigenous contexts in New Zealand, the Northern Territory and Queensland. I then moved into teaching in the Primary Early Years and spent a number of years working in early special education.
I returned to Melbourne and taught in New Arrival settings, secondary EAL contexts, acted as Education Officer for VicTESOL for three years, and undertook research positions at Monash and Deakin. Currently, I am a lecturer in education at Monash University.
I look forward to working with the VicTESOL committee and members this year.
Anne Keary
President, VicTESOL
