Year End 2015

Hello everyone!

Here is our final eBulletin of 2015. And what a fantastic year it has been!

We've been honoured to host range of insightful guest speakers at our professional learning events, in particular at our inspiring Mini-Conference. The hard work and dedication of the entire General Committee has been outstanding, and continued to move VicTESOL onwards and upwards.

Most importantly, the year has been filled with incredible support and interest from our members, new and old. Your enthusiasm for teaching, discussing and learning within the TESOL & EAL field is what drives this organisation on. Thank you!

In order to celebrate the achievements of 2015, we hope you can all join us for our End of Year Celebration and Annual General Meeting, to be held on the 10th of December at the NGV.

Read on for more details about that event, upcoming professional learning opportunities,
new resources from VCAA, and our proposed Semester 1 Professional Learning calendar.

Join the VicTESOL Committee
The VicTESOL AGM is a great place to network, catch up and celebrate our achievements for the year, as well as to say farewell to some committee members and welcome new ones.

And yes, we will be looking for new committee members! If you are in any doubt about the benefits of being on the VicTESOL Committee, please have a read about what one of our newer recruits has to say about being a Committee member (below).

So, if you think you could commit a fraction of your time to help support VicTESOL in 2016, please email VicTESOL to express your interest and come along on the day!

April Edwards
VCE English and EAL Teacher,
EAL Coordinator

VicTESOL Committee member since 2014

Initially when I joined VicTESOL I was not sure what to expect. Yet after the first meeting I came away feeling an enormous sense of privilege to have become a part of the Committee.

It was eye-opening to learn about EAL teaching, learning and policy across all sectors in one location from highly experienced teachers, academics, principals and community workers who were all meeting for a common goal – to improve EAL teacher and student experiences.

Every meeting since has been like a mini-PD for me and I look forward to going to each and every meeting!

Supporting English as an Additional Language (EAL) - Transition to School
New VCAA Resource

The new resource Supporting English as an Additional Language (EAL) at transition to school that has just being published by the VCAA. This resource provides advice and practical examples of how children and families, with English as an Additional Language (EAL), can be supported to make a successful transition to school. It is designed to assist and guide early childhood professionals and teachers in schools.

The importance of supporting children during transition
Children have different preschool experiences. They may have attended services that provide transition to programs in the year prior to school entry: kindergarten, long day care, outside school hours care. Some children may have had no preschool experience.

It is important that services and schools have a clear understanding of a child’s learning and development and that they share this information during the transition process. This includes understanding and sharing information about a child’s language skills in both English and their home language.
