SA entrepreneurs look towards Budget for much-needed relief

Like a farmer staring up to a tiny cloud in a parched sky hoping that it will grow and bring rain, South Africa's business owners are eagerly looking towards the upcoming Budget speech for anything that might relieve the discomfort of the current climate.

It is significant that the man who will be making the speech, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, is the one who was brought in to fix a crisis that shook business owners to their very core. So traumatic was the sudden sacking of the former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene late last year that the Business Partners Limited SME Index showed business owners' confidence levels plummeted beyond the usual fluctuations.

Six ways for businesses to become pillars of the community

Many businesses make a point of giving, from sponsoring sports gear to donating goods to a nearby charity. By helping out in this way, the thinking goes, the business fosters goodwill and loyalty in the community.

But charitable giving is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the ways in which businesses can contribute towards the welfare of the communities and cement their position as good corporate citizens. Gugu Mjadu, executive general manager: marketing at Business Partners Limited (BUSINESS/PARTNERS), lists six ways in which businesses are sure to become pillars of their community.

Are you a
square peg?

This quiz is not scientific but serves to highlight some of the key attributes of entrepreneurs or “square pegs”, as we at Business Partners affectionately call them. The quiz should give you some idea on whether you “possess” entrepreneurial qualities, or not. However, please remember that a positive outcome/score is not a recipe for success.

South Africa’s premier annual entrepreneurial competition, the Entrepreneur of the Year® awards sponsored by Sanlam and BUSINESS/PARTNERS last year named Gil Oved and Ran Neu-Ner, founders and owners of The Creative Counsel (TCC), as the overall winners of the 2015 competition in Johannesburg on 7 September 2015.

Speaking at the awards announcement event, spokesperson for the 2015 Sanlam / Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year® competition, Christo Botes, said that the judging process was extremely challenging this year, with judges having to select winners for the seven categories from 15 deserving finalists who were selected to advance to the final round of judging.

When the head meets the heart, entrepreneurship thrives

Entrepreneurship is a strange mixture of head and heart, emotional commitment and rational thinking, driving passion and careful calculation. Erna Storm experienced this intensely since the day she visited a small preschool in Centurion about two years ago.

The owner of the school had asked her for some business advice. “I fell head over heels in love,” says Storm. Might this be just the venture that she had been looking for ever since she sold her successful media and marketing agency?, she thought at the time.

Her heart took the lead, but all the time her precise and practiced business mind was also at work, carefully measuring the gap in the market, the room for innovation, the scale-ability, and to what extent building a preschool system would fit her need for a legacy project.
