West Orange Chamber Strengthens Business Community through Advocacy

By Rob Maphis, WOCC Chairman

Rob Maphis, WOCC ChairmanThere are many occasions when it is very easy to see the benefits you receive as a West Orange Chamber member. When collaborating with other Chamber members, taking advantage of marketing opportunities or attending Chamber events, the rewards are often immediate and tangible. What may be less noticeable, but every bit as important, are the efforts made by Chamber leadership, staff and committees to advocate for positions that will benefit the entire West Orange business community.

A recent example of business advocacy is through the Chamber’s Economic and Governmental Advocacy Committee (EGAC).  EGAC pushed for the timely development of a design and reconstruction effort for the SR 50 interchange with Florida’s Turnpike.  EGAC encouraged the extension of Old Winter Garden Road west from its current terminus at Maguire Road, with appropriate connections to SR 50 and the Turnpike interchange, and construction of a connection from Tomyn Boulevard to the Turnpike interchange. These changes will create an economic development corridor south of SR 50 and, importantly, studies have shown that this will accommodate rising traffic levels and ease commutes.

This year, EGAC has also worked alongside the Orange County Charter Review Commission to review the current initiative petition process and practice. Changes were recommended that would provide a clear and concise guide for petitioners to follow in seeking to amend the Charter and adopt or amend ordinances. These efforts were made to avoid confusing issues, such as that which surrounded the Paid Sick Leave initiative in 2012. Following EGAC’s recommendation that the WOCC Board of Directors take a position on these issues, the Board voted to support each of these stances.

Building and promoting the West Orange business community is a never-ending job, and the Chamber is up to the task of creating prosperity for all members. Are you interested in taking on a Chamber leadership role, and working on projects like this? Our upcoming Chamber411 will provide great information on how your involvement with the Chamber and its members can lay the foundation for leadership opportunities. Join us on October 6th at Winter Garden City Hall for this informative event!

Arnold Palmer Medical Center Reacts to Passing of Arnold Palmer

It is a sad time for everyone at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Medical Center after receiving news of the passing of the legendary Arnold Palmer.

“The feeling of sorrow we are all experiencing today is indescribable as we mourn the loss of Arnold Palmer,” states John Bozard, president of Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation. “He was a legend on the golf course but his greatest legacy is as a champion for the health of children and families. We offer our deepest sympathies to Arnold’s family during this difficult time.”

In the early 1980s, Palmer began building his legacy of care for women and children when he first visited the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC). There, he met a group of doctors with a vision for a world-class hospital for women and children in Orlando.

By September 1989, Arnold and Winnie Palmer were on hand to cut the ribbon for Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women & Children. Since then, the hospital has become a national leader in children’s healthcare, providing expertise in a number of pediatric specialties. Read full story

Well-waxed autos cram Winter Garden's parking lots during Cruz'n Car shows. In the past, that has left downtown visitors doomed to drive in circles searching for a space. But they were in luck during the most recent quarterly car show on Sept. 17, thanks to the city's new triple-level parking garage. The garage is also good news for produce shoppers at the city's popular Saturday farmers market and for the plant lovers who flock to Spring Fever in the Garden in April, said Stina D'Uva, president of the West Orange Chamber of Commerce. Full story
