Community Shows Strength in Wake of Tragedy, Downtown South Needs Continued Support

By Stina D'Uva, WOCC President/CEO

Stina D'Uva, President/CEOFollowing the tragedy at Pulse nightclub, our community has shown unbelievable strength and unity. Residents responded to the need for blood donations. We have come together across the region for vigils in remembrance of the victims and all those affected. The contributions to the many charitable efforts have been nothing short of amazing.

The West Orange Chamber of Commerce (WOCC) Board of Directors voted to donate $1000 to both the Orlando Health Trauma Center and to the OneOrlando Fund. Orlando Regional Medical Center is the home of Central Florida's only Level One Trauma Center. Doctors, nurses and technicians worked around the clock, saving the lives of dozens of injured victims. In total, they received 44 victims, and have performed 57 surgeries.  Their efforts would not have been possible without support from the greater Orlando community and beyond. Thanks to a generous Foundation, all gifts to ORMC’s Trauma Center before October 31 will be matched dollar for dollar up to $250,000. Click here to support the Orlando Health Trauma Center.

Many businesses in the Downtown South area were closed for days. Others were greatly impacted by road closures, losing a significant number of customers during this time. The area businesses that were able to stay open have been tremendously helpful in providing food, water, supplies and other forms of support. Of course, we always encourage Chamber members to do business with fellow chamber members. However, in this special time, if you happen to be in the area, show your support for Downtown South businesses.

Sincerely,

Stina D'Uva
