Weekly update for MCC Brighton

Greetings <<First Name>>, welcome to this week's newsletter!

Yes it is that time of year already. We have already had our first Advent service and lit the candle of Hope. We have started our Advent theme of Anticipating the Rebel Jesus and are busy putting together our Xmas lessons and Carol service (Which I am very excited about).

Another exciting development is the possibility of snow soon. The thought of doing street church amidst a pristine white blanket, twinkly lights etc. A truly classic winter picture. Lovely!

Then it occurs to me. Yes, these things are great, exciting, fun, full of joy FOR ME, but not so much for those we support. Whilst I will enjoy a good sing song at our carol service there will be those there that are faced with the prospect of heading back out into freezing weather at the end. Whilst I enjoy the picturesque vision of street church surrounded by snow, there will be those joining us, desperate for a hot drink, some noodles and whatever warm gear we can offer.

Christmas is great. A time of love, joy etc etc etc for some but it also has a flip side. It is the most isolating and depressing time of the year for others. A time when suicide rates climb, when vulnerable people are most in need.

So, yes, we should enjoy Christmas to it's fullest but let's not take it for granted. This year let's make an effort to share that joy, share that love and, more importantly, share some of the time we have spare with those in need. MCC Brighton will be at the Clock tower Xmas eve offering a service for the homeless and vulnerably housed. Christmas songs, gift bags, hot drinks, food but above all family. After all, we are all God's Children, so shouldn't we be together at Christmas?

Have a truly blessed week.

Viva La Revolución!

On Sunday the 1st of December we started our Advent series, entitled Anticipating The Rebel Jesus, SJ was the first revolutionary to take the stand. To listen to that again, and our other sermons, click here for our Youtube channel.

One of my favourite musicals, stage or screen, is Les Miserables, which is based on a book by Victor Hugo. It tells the story of several characters, including ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption. It ends with the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris

One of the songs is Can You Hear The People Sing? and it asks the questions, "Will you join in our crusade? Who will be strong and stand with me?".

Christians have been on crusade before, and it is not a pretty part of our history. How about we make this Advent the start of a new crusade- a crusade of peace over violence, a crusade of love over hatred?

Come and join us on Sunday evenings as we hear more about the Rebel Jesus, and join us on Christmas Eve as we bring a little bit of Christmas to those who are lonely, homeless, or vulnerably housed.

Will you join in our crusade?

Blessings and love,

Heavenly Creator, watch over your children, especially those with no homes to return to at the end of long and weary days. Protect them from all harm and keep them from despair. Open the hearts and eyes of those of us with blessings to share and unite our voices in a call for justice.
As we learn more about your son Jesus, help us to walk in his footsteps, and to do what he did, for ALL your children.

In the many names of God we pray,
