Fred the Rubber Ducky

This is the first dev log, newsletter, update or however you want to call it, about Fred the Rubber Ducky. It's a 2D platformer I'm developing as a solo indiegame developer. My name is Jens Kooij. I'm a web developer for a large company in the Netherlands, but in college I did a minor in Game Design and this has been tickling ever since. That's why I decided that 2020 is going to be the year I release my very first solo game ever.
Through this newsletter, I want to share progress and updates with those interested in such a thing.

So what about a release date?

Wow, steady! I've only just started. This is my very first solo project when it comes to gamedev. All I know is that my intention is to release it 2020. I aim for the fourth quarter of the year. If all goes the way I planned, I hope to be in time for the Steam Winter sale. There. Before the end of 2020 is the release date for now.

What has been done in the first month?

In the first month of development I've mostly done a lot of sketching, getting used to Unity and thinking about the game in general.
I implemented this cool wind mechanic that will be used in the sewer level. A switch will turn it on and off.
This is the initial sketch of the sewer level I made on paper.
And this is the start of the implementation of the level in Unity.

Show & Tell on r/gamedev

In december of 2019, there was a show 'n tell hosted at the r/gamedev community on Reddit. I decided to participate with my week's worth of development.
It was really cool seeing my post on Reddit get all this nice feedback from the r/gamedev community. You can still view it here on Reddit if you want, but it's since been removed, because the show and tell event ended.

So where do we go from here?

I hope to write some more on the progress in the coming months, but more importantly I hope to really get crackin' on the development itself. A lot has to get done before release. Development, artwork, music to name a few. Creating a Steam page, playtesting, promotion to name a few more.
Here's a sneak peak of Fred in the bathtub.
