While recently in Haiti, we made a home visit to one of our Spiritual Shepherds, Pastor Lumanes Auguste. I’ve known Lumanes since 2014 and he is a man I’ve grown to love. I wrote about our journey together in this Standing on the Shoulders post. Unfortunately, Pastor Lumanes road has been much harder these past few years. While driving his motorcycle, another driver collided with him and compound-fractured his leg. Then, the hospital didn’t repair it correctly, causing him to walk with a cane for 18 months. Then, while having corrective surgery to repair the leg, he suffered a massive stroke. Bedridden for the past months, he sits in a bed on his porch and does physical therapy to learn to walk and talk again. Two things stuck out as I was sitting with him. First, the light was still in his eyes. His passions for loving God and loving people were still present. Even in these troubling circumstances, he had faith in God. Second, how easily this all can be taken away. Walking was never a problem. Now it is. Talking was never a problem. Now it is. Do I appreciate the gifts that have been given to me, like the ability to walk and talk? Am I stewarding these gifts well? Will it take me losing something to appreciate what I have or can I cherish it right now? Each of us has been given unique gifts we take for granted. What can you appreciate today? Where do you need to make changes to steward the gift better? Take an inventory this week of the simple, mundane gifts you have that if taken away, you’d miss greatly. As people of impact, gratitude is a fuel to increase our influence. Name it.
