County Health Officer to Permit Children’s Dental Group of Anaheim to Resume Use of Facility Water for Dental Procedures

(Santa Ana, CA) – Today, the County of Orange Health Officer has lifted his Health Officer Order, in effect since September 15, 2016, and permitted the Children’s Dental Group of Anaheim to resume use of that facility’s on-site water system to perform patient dental procedures.

That Order was issued as a result of the contamination of the internal water system with Mycobacterium abscessus that appears to be linked to infections in more than 50 children who received pulpotomies at the facility between March 1, 2016, and August 11, 2016.
“Since the Order was served, Children’s Dental Group has been fully cooperative with the investigation, and in consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a plan for remediation was approved,” said Dr. Eric Handler, County Health Officer. “The on-site water system has been completely removed, replaced with new equipment, and the water from the new system has been tested to ensure it meets the standards established by the American Dental Association.”
In addition to the plan for ongoing monitoring of the water system, appropriate safeguards are now in place to prevent further contamination. They include the use of a treatment designed to prevent bacteria from adhering to equipment as well as the installation of purification cartridges at every dental chair connected to the on-site water system.
