The Point of Water is a wall installation that uses fabricated, recycled, and found steel objects. In Bamana thought in addition to north, south east and west there is a 5th cardinal point: the point of water. Access to water determines where villages are located.  The circle can be like a drop of rain, a symbol of water.  And the ellipse can symbolize a body of water.

"Spiritually, according to an old African legend, if you are attracted to cowrie shells you could be family to an ocean spirit of wealth and earth."

Growing up in Bamenda in Cameroon, if you wore cowries, you belonged to the royal family. In African Dance, it's a rite of passage that all dancers go through to own their presence on stage. This workshop is geared toward aficionados looking to fellowship with like-minded spirits in a creative environment and to design  Afrocentric masks for the new year and begin exploring a costume . We encourage our participants to bring their own bra (a cup size larger) or a top they would like to adorn. We will be making cowrie shell bras and tops.

Beads, cowries, sewing material and fabric will be provided by Siren - Protectors of the Rainforest, Inc. #Africansnacks and wine will be served

HEADWRAPS WORKSHOP: ANCESTRAL PATHWAYS BY GERARD MILLER

Sat, December 8, 2018, 2PM -4PM

Calabar Imports, Bed Stuy, 351 TOMPKINS AVENUE, BROOKLYN, NY 11216

This Headwrap workshop by Gerard Miller will demonstrate 3 styles and talk in detail about the ancestral history of wrapping. Headwraps and coverings have been a part African and Indigenous American tradition from time immemorial. At times, like with the tignon and doek, the covering was 'imposed' by the imperialist to restrict the expression of African femininity, not understanding that they were only adding FUEL to the fire. Headwraps serve as functional gear to protect us from the elements, and have been used to varying degrees as adornments and status symbols.

As folks have re-Indigenized and re-Africanized through the decades, head coverings have recaptured some of the mystique they once held. Sometimes it's an elaborate Nefertiti-style wrap or an ostentatious gele, sometimes it's a simple cloth tied by a ring shouter or kitchen maven, sometimes it's a careful-chosen and well-placed hat.
