I confess I was scratching my head as to a theme this month, but one of the common threads in the below TypoMusings are relationships. The lead feature this month (Grimm and Grotesk) marries fairy tale narratives, with Swiss graphic styling. Atlan is a tale of both collaboration and the bringing together of old and new. Future Library brings together art, publishing and horticulture. Jamie Clarke's beautiful brew inspired project applies type design principles to illustration, Marcel's letters is a story of both love, war and type design - they are all rich multidisciplinary projects - and ones I hope you will enjoy!

This newsletter and the web traffic have experienced a lot of growth lately - so I also wanted to take the opportunity to re-introduce myself so that you know the person behind the posts and a little of the context behind the writing.

Next month I am teaching in Auckland and Christchurch for Design Assembly, as well as the full-day workshops we will be hosting a Type Swilling Social night in Auckland on the 26th of May. I'd love to see you at one of these events if you're local!

I tested how fontself can be used to explore transparency in type.

I believe we can never have meaning unmediated by form, so I wanted to create some type which played with Beatrice Wardes Crystal Goblet visual metaphor. (In support of some research I am doing around textual meaning in book design.)

Carolyn Porter was combing an antique store in Minnesota for inspiration for a typeface when she stumbled upon a bundle of World War II era letters. Carolyn was "immediately drawn to their beautifully expressive pen-and-ink handwriting". Carolyn's new book Marcel's Letters is the result of years of research. Documenting both the type design process and her increasingly desperate search to uncover the mystery of her muse Marcel Heuzé,’s fate during WWII.

Timberline is the latest release from Resistenza - A handwritten font, with glorous penmanship (as we have come to expect from Giuseppe and Paco) Timberline is full of character, texture, whimsy and grace.
Inspired by Emily's work I played with words and wood by letterpress printing on to different pieces of native bark in the print pavilion this weekend to mark Earthday. You can see what inky fun I got upto via instagram. (The header image this month is also from this weekends ink play - the latest in my type as pixels series this composition was anything but 'easy as ABC' to typeset!)
