Country & Eastern 2019

Country & Eastern Newsletter January 2019

The first part of our wonderful new cooperation with Indian musicians, the visit by Akkarai Sisters for concerts with Berger Knutsson Spering Schultz in Sweden last October will hopefully be followed by our return visit to India at the end of this year to make music together with the Karnatic and Hindustani greats.

We will try to release some more good music this year, there are more classical recordings from India and maybe the time has come to dig into our vaults of Ghanaian music from the seventies. Maybe even something from Sweden! As the CD market is dwindling we might focus more on digital releases though.

As you can see below, Beches Brew continue the Saturday concerts in Gothenburg TOMORROW!

Oh, and one more thing: The glorious Hjeltamôs album by Per Gudmundson and Bengan Janson is nominated for a Grammy! Watch out on February 7.

Saturday concerts in Gothenburg start tomorrow!

Beches Brew plays Saturday afternoons at Studio HPKSM since January 2018 with Gothenburg greats Thomas Gustafsson, Sir Thomas Jäderlund, Göran Klinghagen Stefan Bellnäs and Bengt Berger . We did two albums this year and will continue our Saturday concerts, even expanding them with William Soovik Grand Finale taking over in the Saturday evenings after our concert. Fill your Saturdays with Old and New Dreams from January 5 at 4 p.m!

Akkarai Sisters & Berger Knutsson Spering Schultz

In October we had the wonderful Akkarai Sisters back in Sweden with brilliant percussionists Jayachandra Rao and Shreesundarkumar. This time we did not play with the big group that recorded Beches Indian Brew a couple of years back, but with the Berger Knutsson Spering Schultz quartet. The tour was supported by the Swedish Arts Counsil and we hope we will be able to do the return visit at the end of this year to conclude our Swedish-Indian musical exchange project for this time with some of the greatest Indian classical musicians today.

The 2018 releases:

In June we had three digital Dhrupad releases with members of the Dagar family.
A solo album with Zia Fariduddin Dagar, a competitive morning session between members of two of the Dagar branches when Fariduddin meets Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar, and one more gem, the brothers Zia Mohiuddin and Fariduddin sings before the Maharaja of Dungarpur in the same way that their father sang before the Maharaja of Udaipur during their childhood. These are truly unique recordings from 1968. Here is an illuminating review by Raul da Gama, Dagar Dynasty: The Mysticism of Dagar "Vani" Dhrupad
Per Gudmundson and Bengan Janson recorded Hjeltamôs, a terrific album of Swedish traditional folk music
in honour of violin legend Björn Ståbi played by two of the real masters. The album is nominated for a Swedish Grammy. Here is a video of them playing the title song from the album Hjeltamôs
Stefan Bellnäs is finally serving us the first album in his own name: Podunk. Stefan is the most sought after bass player in the Gothenburg area of Sweden and he has created an album of truly original and diverse music. A completely natural mix of blues, country, jazz, folk music, bluegrass, reggae, avant-gardic café musik and what not.
During all of 2018, Beches Brew has played most Saturdays at Studio HPKSM and, yes, we did record! One studio album, Gothenburg, and one digital live recording, Gothenburg Live, from the club featuring the West Coast Edition of the band with Thomas Gustafsson, Sir Thomas Jäderlund, Göran Klinghagen, Stefan Bellnäs and Bengt Berger. And, yes again, we will continue playing during 2019!

A bonus video for you: Gurubhandu Pandit Anand Badamikar plays a solo in Trital at the Pandit Taranath centenary celebrations in 2015.
