Country & Eastern 2018

Country & Eastern Newsletter June, 2018

On June 8, 2018 Country & Eastern presents:
Two of Sweden's greatest folk music heroes release their first CD together. - AND -
three unique 50-year old Dhrupad recordings with members of the Dagar family

Per Gudmundson & Bengan Janson: Hjeltamôs (CE39)

Two of the contemporary masters in Swedish Folk Music with an album of traditional music in which every performance builds on a long chain of historically transmitted knowledge. "Here we play – without conscious sideglances or agendas music that we have, for most of our lives, learned to love and express in our own way. This album is dedicated to our friend and mentor Björn Ståbi” - Per & Bengan. You can soon enjoy a video of the title song. Here is more about the album Hjeltamôs and another fine video from the album.

Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar and Zia Fariduddin Dagar: RAAG KOMAL RI ASAVARI (CEX22)

One morning when Fahimuddin Dagar was visiting his cousins in Chembur he called Fariduddin and invited him to sing a very gentle morning raga Komal Rishab Asavari. As they belong to different branches of the Dagar family a unique and somewhat competitive session took place where they both sang their hearts out for one and a half hours of very fantastic music. More about RAAG KOMAL RI ASAVARI

Zia Mohiuddin & Zia Fariduddin Dagar: DHRUPAD (CEX21)
Exactly 50 years ago Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar received a visit from H.H. Laxman Singh Bahadur, the Maharaja of Dungarpur in his apartment in Chembur. Something very special happened that day. It felt like Ustad was transported back to the time when his father was playing before his Maharaja in Udaipur. For two hours Ustad and his brother Fariduddin played and sang very rare old Dhrupad compositions much as his father had done another 50 years before. Here is more about DHRUPAD

Zia Fariduddin Dagar: KALAVATI (CEX20)
”In the summer of 1968 Fariduddin Dagar took me to his hometown Udaipur where he and Z.M. Dagar had grown up with their father who was the main court musician under H.H Maharaja Bhupal Singh. On the way we stopped at Nathdwara, a town rich with Dhrupad history and there we met a very very good elderly pakhawaj player who accompanied Farid in a spontaneous rendering of Raag Kalavati in Dhammar tala of 14 beats.” – Bengt Berger Here is more about the album KALAVATI
