Country & Eastern 2018

Country & Eastern Newsletter April 12, 2018

This album was recorded 50 years ago today!

Exactly 100 years ago today, the Maharaja of Udaipur, H.H Maharaja Bhupal Singh whom you see above, was most likely calling his finest court musician Ustad Ziauddin Dagar to sing before him as he usually did. Ziauddin's sons were not born yet but later on they would often join their father in performance before the king. 50 years later, exactly 50 years ago today, on April 12 1968, Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar received a visit from H.H. Laxman Singh Bahadur, the Maharaja of Dungarpur in his apartment in Chembur. Something very special happened that day. It felt like Ustad was transported back to the time when his father was playing before his Maharaja in Udaipur.
Ustad and his brother Fariduddin started with a vocal/rudra veena duet in Multani and after that they sang very old, very rare and very beautiful Dhrupad compositions for more than one hour, some of them even composed by Tansen at Akbars court in the 16th century. Luckily I had my Nagra tape recorder at hand so you can soon take part in this once-in-a-lifetime event as the album DHRUPAD will be out in digital format later this spring as will an album with RAAG KALAVATI recorded later that same year by Ustad Fariduddin Dagar plus, on top of this, one more big surprise that we will not disclose yet.

Per Gudmundson & Bengan Janson: Hjeltamôs

In the middle of October 2017 Sigge Krantz met up with two of our great Swedish master musicians, fiddler Per Gudmundson and accordionist Bengan Janson at their home in Leksand, Dalecarlia, the heartland of Swedish folk music. During a couple of days they recorded 14 traditional and 3 newly composed pieces that Country & Eastern will release on June 6. The album is dedicated to their great friend and mentor Björn Ståbi. In a week or two you can enjoy a video of Polska efter Monis Olle, one of the songs from the album, filmed right there by Viktor Gårdsäter who also took the photo above. You will soon find it at YouTube at the Music from Country & Eastern albums playlist.
