OUR LEGISLATIVE AGENDA
Introducing SCHSD’s 2020 legislative agenda! Our agenda includes bills that we will be pushing on local and state levels— bills currently in our state House and Senate, as well as bills proposed by SCHSD. View our top three bills below, and click on each image for more information! OUR TOP THREE BILLS!

The South Carolina Compassionate Care Act would allow for the physician-authorized use of marijuana for patients with specific debilitating medical conditions. According to a poll taken by Benchmark Research in early 2019, 72% of South Carolinians support the legalization of medical marijuana— sweeping bipartisan support. Click on the image to learn more!
This Bill ensures that teachers in SC are given a free unobstructed planning period, connections with mentors, alleviate paperwork, ensure a safe and secure workplace environment as well as provide other fundamental rights.

This is a bill proposed by SCHSD, based on 1991 LD 1166 from Maine. It would state that retailers may only provide plastic bags if there is a receptacle to collect used bags for recycling within 20 feet of the entrance. Recycling plastic would limit ocean pollution and landfill overflows. Click on the picture for more information!

INTRODUCING THE SOUTHEAST VIRTUAL CHAPTER!
WHAT IS THE SOUTHEAST VIRTUAL CHAPTER?

The Southeast Virtual Chapter is intended to build a community of students who are unable to get involved in HSDA locally, by joining or starting a local chapter, due to their social situation, community, or home life. SC, GA, and NC are working together to organize and expand the online HSDA community in the Southeast.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

- Foster an online community of high school Democrats
- Guest Speaker Calls
- Candidate support and phone banks
- Issue discussions
- Joint projects with HSDA

WHO CAN GET INVOLVED?

Anyone who wants to get more involved in the Democratic Party, but may not be comfortable going to physical meetings or starting a local chapter, may be part of the Southeast Virtual Chapter. No previous experience is necessary— join today with the link below!

EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT LOBBY DAY!
SIGN OUR PETITION!
WHAT IS THE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT?

The ERA is a proposed amendment to the Constitution that was first introduced by Alice Paul at Seneca Falls in 1923. If added to the Constitution, it would guarantee gender equality in the United States and provide a universal judicial standard for sex discrimination cases.

Virginia’s passage of the Equal Rights Amendment marked the 38th and final state needed to approve a Constitutional amendment under Article V. However, the deadline for ratification passed in 1982. A bill to extend this deadline, SJ Res 6, was introduced earlier this year.

Visit generationratify.org for more information.

SIGN OUR PETITION!

Concerned about the issue of gender equality in America? Sign our online petition to Senator Lindsey Graham and Senator Tim Scott in support of the passage of SJ Res 6 here!

OUR UPCOMING LOBBYING MEETINGS!

We will be having meetings with Senator Scott and Graham’s offices in late Feburary/early March to deliver our petition and support the passage of SJ Res 6, the removal of the deadline of the Equal Rights Amendment, in Greenville and in the Lowcountry! Want to join us for these meetings?

If you live near Greenville:  If you live in the Lowcountry: Dates and times will be released ASAP!

As a developing chapter, we are at a critical time for expansion. Even if you don’t have experience in politics or HSDA, an expansion committee is a great way to get involved on the state level! Any questions? Contact our expansion director at sdobson@hsdems.org.
