Our competition members have had a very busy, and fun, time over the past month with carnival after carnival!
Our Australia Day Boat Carnival was a massive success, and even bigger than last year with over 162 crews racing! This makes it the largest Surf Boat Carnival within the State! The first day of the carnival provided a great opportunity for our junior crews, North Steyne Shenanigans (U19 Female) and North Steyne Mullets (U19 Male) a chance to race in their very first carnival. On day two, we saw the surf pick up, with lots of rolling boats and amazing work by our water safety team rescuing not only oars but rowers too! The North Steyne Neds (Open Male), North Steyne Buccaneers (Reserve Males) and Tigerlillies (Reserve females) had amazing races with the Tigerlillies making it through to the semifinals.
Special thanks to David Cowell and all the amazing helpers on the Carnival BBQ over the two days and to our incredible supporters, Manly Lions Club. Thank you to all volunteers on the First Aid Tent including the lifesaving competition team who also helped with set up. The young juniors boaties contribution was outstanding, backing up a day of racing to spend the second day covering the IRB and first aid shifts. A huge thank you must also to Dan H, Jack W, Dave G, Mark S for amazing water safety. Congratulations to all the Boaties and to all the helpers over the weekend, this is one our largest fundraisers for the year!

The Mullets and Shenanigans backed up their carnival debut to race at Collaroy Young Guns on 31st January. Despite the not so ideal conditions, the crews did amazing and Ross was a true team player, rowing through despite some very bruised ribs!
The Neds, have also managed to compete in two rounds of Ocean Thunder on 30th January and this past weekend 20th February at Dee Why. The boys had some solid races under some challenging surf conditions.

Moving to Lifesaving and Masters events, we had success at our various Branch Championships events. The theory components were held at Branch head office at Warriewood on 25th and 26th January followed by the practical (water and beach events) on 14th February. Our masters team competed at Palm Beach in early January and with very tricky surf conditions and lots of bluebottles saw the team only compete in board races, with the swim being cancelled. Huge congrats to Erin Colwell, Lou Lou Stanley and Sal Riberio for competing in their first masters competitions! The Champion Lifesaver event also saw four of our younger members compete for the first time in the U17 female and all of them did so well.
On Sunday 14th February, North Steyne hosted the Branch Championships for Juniors, Masters and Open Beach events, 1km/2km run for nippers and all ages as well as Lifesaving events, R&R and the iconic march past. Massive thank you to everyone who has helped with ensuring we run these events in a very COVID compliant and successful way. Dave Guthrie, IRB Captain, has been key in ensuring we have all our water safety and water area set up for all the carnivals – thanks Dave for making all this possible. A special thanks also to Ally S, Chris S, Claire O, Janice F, Cath H and Paul M for all their help behind the scenes to make these carnivals a success. For more photos and all the results please visit our website news.
Lock it in! We are so excited to hold our Club Championships this year on Sunday 28 March! Open for members who are SRC and Bronze Proficient (U14 and upwards). Draft program will be released soon!
And lastly, Training is held every Saturday 7-8am and Sunday 8-9am. Bring your hi vis rashie and googles and enjoy a mix of boards and swimming. All fitness levels welcome.
If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to me!
Look forward to seeing you at the beach

What a huge month for Nippers this has been! With North Steyne so well represented by Emilie Morris and Oskar Townsin-Brant at this season’s Junior Lifesaver of the Year awards with Emilie being awarded the overall winner (female). All JLOTY’s had to submit a detailed proposal for an initiative within surf life saving, attend workshops and interviews – a rigorous process! Emilie’s concept was around supporting the mental health of lifesavers who attend traumatic incidents. Oskar’s proposal was to implement a buddy system on patrol for SRCs. Both incredible efforts.
Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) success this month! The biggest and most resilient SRC group for many years finally got through their assessment this month after many delays and postponements due to surf conditions and COVID. They received their uniforms from Club legends Jack Sutherland and Simon Fry who shared some words of wisdom with our new lifesavers. Say hello if you happen to see them on patrol in their shiny new uniforms. Congratulations to them and thanks to trainer Jodie Frazer, age managers Kevin Kehoe, Shaun and Nikki Parren, water safety crew Roger van der Zandt, Steve Hanson and Roger Brant.

North Steyne was well represented at the Branch Beach Championships, with the 1km run held at our club this year. Our Nippers placed 2nd in the U12 girls and U10 boys and 3rd in the U9 boys. We also had a team of over 30 Nippers competing at the Branch Water Championships at Palm Beach and despite some challenging conditions with the surf and seaweed, it was exciting to watch the North Steyne kids making it through heats and into numerous finals. Our nippers placed 1st in U10 Boys Board, 2nd in U10 Boys Board Relay, U9 Girls Board Relay and U9 Boys Board Relay, 3rd in U10 Boys Swim Team and U9 Boys Board and U9 Boys Swim. Such a fantastic result.

Lastly, our Nipper State Team of 31 Nippers will represent North Steyne at the NSW Nipper State Championships in Swansea Belmont from Thursday 25th February to Sunday 28th February. The team were very proud to receive their uniforms from board coach Tom Bedingfield at a ceremony at the clubhouse last Saturday. We wish every one of our team the very best of luck and know that they will represent North Steyne SLSC with distinction.
See you on the beach!

Thank you to the North Steyne cadet helpers on the First Aid Tent at the recent Branch carnival, hosted at North Steyne. This offered a great opportunity to practice your skills (luckily we only had a few minor incidents) and your help was very much appreciated.
It's been great to see our new SRCs on patrol over recent weeks. This large group was finally assessed in early Feb after COVID and weather delays impacting the already delayed assessment date(s). The group has been busy in recent weeks, assisting with Nippers water safety on Sundays, as well as attending their rostered patrols. And they are already getting into the great habit of finding subs if they can't attend own patrol. Awesome effort by all!
