Dear Members,
What a season 2019-2020 has been! All in all, we have had a terrific season with growth in our membership, a great crew of Nippers, the running of 2 very successful carnivals and the visit of our friends from Gaza for which we were profiled around the world. On top of that, in December/January we experienced the fires, in February the floods and now we have a new challenge upon us.

Given the current COVID-19 situation and with growing government restrictions, we have decided to officially wrap-up the season and put some additional safeguards around the operations of our Club. This was not an easy decision to make but the health, safety and well-being of our members is our first priority.

What this means is that effective immediately we will no longer be running patrols on North Steyne Beach, all training has been suspended and the building has been shut down and will not be accessible until further notice. All our social events have also been postponed.

All these measures, of course, are temporary and we will be monitoring the situation so that as things improve we can get back to normal as quickly as possible.

Remember that North Steyne SLSC is more than a building and more than the activities we are involved in. The strength of North Steyne is all our members who work as a team, care for each other and lend support when the going gets tough. So while the building may close, North Steyne will not. Over the next few months, we will still be in contact and provide other ways to connect. We are currently working on some on-line training, virtual member meet-ups and support for those who need an extra helping hand.

Do not hesitate to reach out to me if we can be of assistance in anyway.  Stay connected with us. We are here for you, and we look forward to welcoming you back to our beach in the not too distant future.

Take care and stay safe,

Chris Gibbs Stewart             Jack Sutherland

Life Saving

Dear Team North Steyne,
As you are now aware the season has been bought to an early close by the COVID-19 pandemic.  But don't fear we will be back on the beach later this year for the next season! and I look forward to catching up with you all then.
I believe that it is a good time to look back on the season for some of its high points, entertainment and innovations that have come out of the season so far.
Firstly, in terms of high points, I see the success of our Patrolling members turning up week in and out.  Each and every member managing in general with a sense of pride and teamwork to ensure we honoured our commitments, everyone getting better at organising patrol swaps if you couldn’t make it. I would like to thank all those members who backed up, did extra patrols and made sure that we ran smoothly and professionally.
Observation Patrol last Sunday 22 March, Safety first at North Steyne.
I also feel that the successful carnivals that were run, that being the Nippers and the Boat Carnivals were a great success and some of the best-run events at Surf that I have ever seen, so congrats to all those who put up their hands to help and compete.

We have participated in numerous rescues this season, with a few being after hours, all our members performed with the utmost professionalism, again I say thank you.  We have also had various members assist under the Emergency Services requirements during the Bushfire Crisis and also during the flooding that followed, again all members performed with the dedication and determination inherent in our Club DNA, so thank you all.
Additionally, I see the introduction of the Junior boat crew which has really been a great step for our younger members to encourage, participate and learn the dark arts of boat rowing! Hopefully, not all the dark arts......

Despite many challenges this season, North Steyne had great participation and some wonderful competition results in 2019-20. We were represented in surfboat carnivals by our Open Mens, Reserve Mens and Womens and Masters crews, with a new Under 19 crew in development. These crews rowed locally and around the state with some encouraging results.

Our Lifesaving competitors won 1 gold and 3 bronze medals at State championships.  We would like to celebrate their achievements and will be doing so as soon as we can.

Unfortunately, Open and Masters Branch Championships were cancelled due to storm damage to the beaches, then, of course, the Aussies being cancelled due to Covid-19 risk.

There will be no Winter competition in IRB racing, the Boardriding Championships have also been cancelled and no Club Championships this year now, we will just have to wait to next season.  As you can see from the President's message there is no club activities and no club access: All surf sports and general fitness training are suspended until further notice. This includes private paddling sessions and gym use.
The club will resume training as soon as possible to prepare for season 2020-2021 competition.

Looking forward to the new season!

Nipper News

That’s a wrap for season 2019-20! We had a great season and this was thanks to our fantastic team of age managers, parent helpers, coaches, water safety, sponsors, BBQ crew, carnival referees and officials – we couldn’t have done it without you. Big thanks!

There was a great turnout for our nipper presentation day which was held on Saturday 14th March at Balgowlah RSL with the awards presented by our VIP guests and club legends. We received a lot of positive feedback .. read more here

Youth News

Wow, what a wonderful season we’ve had again at North Steyne. It’s been great seeing so many cadets on patrol, as well as earning higher awards, attending training sessions, competing for the club and offering volunteer assistance wherever needed.
A big congratulations to this season’s U14's who have now officially graduated to the Cadet Program. They were recognised for their efforts in obtaining their Surf Rescue Certificate at the recent Nippers Presentation where they received their 'Noughties' hoodies. An important first step into their lifesaving careers - the SRC that is, though some may say the Hoodie is an important part of the process!
Off-season activities for North Steyne Cadets will continue online with a regular Saturday Zoom session with some fun themes. Check your emails for invitations next week to join in our digital group catch-ups. The invitation will be sent to the email you have listed on the member portal. Please log in and review and change your details if necessary before 31st March. You may have emails going to old schools or accounts that are no longer valid. Assistant Youth Director (and past cadet) Ewan Cooper-Frater will be facilitating these. And of course, please forward any themes you would like to see covered off.

As always, I am happy to answer any questions from Parents and Cadets.
Jodie Fraser
Youth Director

North Steyne Activies may have come to an early close but on a positive note, the club is happily donating the BBQ supplies that were not able to be used to Saint Faiths Food Bank, based in Narrabeen.  They welcomed our contribution and will be distributing the food to various soup kitchens as well as dividing it up in food hampers to those in need.  The Sunday Club BBQ has been cancelled till further notice.
We all need to keep strong and as positive as possible.  Let us follow in the footsteps of many of the Life Members, members of the A Team and A-Teams, who are keeping in touch with each other and making sure they are supporting one another.  On that note, the Q&A Night that was scheduled for 27th March has been postponed.  Just gives the story tellers more time to brush up on their scripts!  We will reschedule this special event and will keep you posted.
Lastly, the Annual Club Presentation Night and Ripper Nippers Presentation will not be going ahead in May, however, we are still working on the Awards, so a new date will be set in due course.
North Steyne Snack Shack
is still in business and supporting the Club with usual discount for Club Members, so please support this local business with their great snack foods.
