Introducing the New
North Steyne Board
|
|
|
The Patrolling season commences this weekend and we are very much looking forward to seeing you on the beach in the red and yellow. The Clubhouse is still under strict COVID restrictions so please remember to follow the rules. We should all be minimising our need to enter the Clubhouse. Your Patrol Captain (PC) has been informed of the conditions set around patrolling and will be kept up to date with all new protocols set by SLSNSW.
The Draft Patrol Roster is in play but due to the nature of the season ahead, this roster is subject to change. We are doing our best to minimise the changes and your PC will endeavour to keep you informed in a timely manner of any changes. This Draft roster can be found in the member's area on the website here.
We would like to stress that we want you to feel supported, if you are struggling to meet Patrol commitments please get in touch. We are aiming to have a new system for finding Subs for your patrols but until this process is in place, please use the Facebook Group to put a call out for a swap or for a replacement. We are a team here at North Steyne and we are all here to support one another.
Jack Watt, Club Vice-Captain, and I will regularly be attending all patrols to check on how everyone is going and to discuss any concerns. We would also like to entice you all to join in other activities at the club and to upskill. This year there will be opportunities to be rewarded for your commitment.
If you have any questions or comments please email me directly, I look forward to speaking with you.
Dan Hillier
Club Captain

The award for OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT Goes to....
Dannii Edwards
|
|
|
A very deserving recipient, we would like to share some words Dannii shared after the win...
"Last Saturday North Steyne awarded me with Outstanding Service. I was extremely shocked as I thought that these kinds of awards usually go to people who are more senior or people who offer more time than I do. I was really honoured to receive this award presented by my long-time supporter Paul Matthew, a North Steyne Life Member who was my Age Manager for Nippers (U14). It took him countless times to get me to pass my proficiency for the surf rescue certificate (I could not swim 25 m in a pool, not joking there), but the thing is that he never stopped believing in me.
|
|
Perseverance and resilience are two words I associate with continuous journey in Surf Life Saving. In the past years I have undertaken rescues in surf and floods, become the third female in my branch to be a Rescue Water Craft Operator, patrolled from the land, water, sand, boat, big boat and Jet Ski and most importantly made some incredible connections along the way whilst doing the things I love. Thanks to Tracey for being such a queen and role model. Thanks to North Steyne S.L.S.C for being such a great family-centred surf club. Thanks to Adrian for feeding my passion for lifesaving and support operations. Looking forward to seeing the season commence again! "
May Dannii's example be one to follow! Dannii is an inspiration for all young girls who wish to give Surf Lifesaving a go!

Our COVID safe plan for online clothing sales has swung into action. You can order clothing via this link in the member's area on our club website.
We will hold a proficiency swim for all nippers in U8 and above at Manly Boy Charlton Pool from 4.30 to 6 pm on Saturday 26 September and one more on Saturday 10 October if required. Please note, if your nipper is not signed off by us as swim proficient, they cannot participate in nippers.

The water is sitting around 15 degrees and with the sun out, it feels even warmer! If you have been hibernating over winter now is the perfect time to dust off the swimmers and join us for Board Training every Sunday 8 - 9 am. These training sessions are the perfect opportunity for you to work on your board skills and improve your fitness with upcoming proficiencies. We meet at 7:55 am at the surf club, remember to pack your goggles and pink hi-vis rash vest. Training is a mix of boards, swimming, and some very short sand running. All fitness levels welcome!
We are always on the lookout for members who want to give it a go at Competition – there are various events to compete in such as First Aid, Patrol Competition, Beach events, Boards and Champion LifeSaver to name a few. Competition is open for U15's to Opens and 30 years+. For the master’s events, yes over 30 years is considered masters, carnivals are always a good excuse to socialize and mix with other competitors along the Northern Beaches.
Maybe you are interested in Surf Boat Competition, this season we have 5 crews! They are always on the lookout for any members interested in giving it a go! Training is at Clontarf beach to practice in flat water rowing prior to going into the waves. Give them a follow on Instagram @north_steyne_surfboats and also our amazing female crew @northsteyneboatettes to get a behind the scenes look at their training as they prepare for the upcoming season.
SAVE THE DATE: North Steyne is hosting two carnivals this season.
- Nippers Carnival on Sunday 22nd November
- Surf Boat Carnival on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th January 2021.
These two carnivals are major fundraising opportunities for the Club and without the amazing support of our members and volunteers, we would not be able to make both events possible. If you want to put your name down as a helper on the day or assist in the lead up for these events, contact the Carnival Committee.
See you on the Beach!

Jarrod Kreft, President of Manly Lions and Nigel Jeny, former President, recently donated two rescue boards to Chris Gibbs Stewart and David Cowell on the beach at North Steyne SLSC.
|
|
Both Jarrod and Nigel have been keen to support water safety for the Nippers Programs and SRC training and also presented a generous donation of $4,000 towards our Special Needs Nipper Program this season.
Manly Lions have been involved with NSSLSC for a number of seasons and will provide their Manly Lions BBQ trailer and volunteers for the NSSLSC Nippers Carnival, Australia Day Weekend Surfboat Carnival as well as other events at our Club. Thank you again to all the members of Manly Lions for your generous support.

Balgowlah RSL have again provided a grant for the 2020-21 Season to support our Nippers and Youth Programs at NSSLSC through the Clubs NSW Grants program. The $6,000 demonstrates the generous support of Balgowlah RSL with the Covid-19 impact on their revenue; showing the importance of the local Community Groups and the NSSLSC Programs like the Special Needs Nippers. Our sincere thanks go to Des McAteer, BRSL President and the team for continuing support. Make sure you show your support, become a member and enjoy the Bayshores Bistro with the family, the Gold Bar with your competition team or The Wine Room for that special occasion and Wine Tasting experience. Be a friend to a friend and take a friend….or two!
