Dear Members,

What an incredible start to the season we have had at North Steyne.  Thank
you to all who have contributed to a successful welcome back to the beach!

Our member numbers are slowly climbing as patrols get into full swing and our
Nippers are active on the beach. If you have not yet renewed your membership,
can you please do so here. All members must be financial to ensure they are
properly insured.

Following the AGM, we have been collecting more feedback from members on
our masterplan. There is still time to contribute and please feel free to email at
president@northsteyneslsc.com.au your thoughts on what is important to you
about North Steyne and how you would like to see the clubhouse developed.

Finally,  our volunteer patrollers have been most pleased to see the shower
and change rooms now open on weekends.  Please note, until further notice,
the downstairs area of the club is still closed on weekdays, with the exception of Club delegates only allowed entry.

We thank you in advance for adhering to all the COVIDSAFE rules and I
encourage you to support each other in reminding your family and friends to be
vigilant, to obey social distancing rules, and remembering not to congregate in
groups around the Club.  We want North Steyne to be open and a fun, safe
place for you to enjoy!

We look forward to seeing you on the beach.

Stay safe and well,
Chris Gibbs Stewart
President

The Club BBQ is Opening

We are excited to advise that the regular Club Sunday BBQ will be starting this  Sunday, 25th October.   Our Life Members, the 'A Team' will be kicking off the BBQ season and they are chomping at the bit to see you all again after months of isolation!  The following Sunday will see the 'A Minus' team in charge.  For any newcomers to the club and for any of those who don’t know these wonderful legendary members of the club, please make sure you go and say hello, buy a sausage sizzle or a bombora, they are the best on the promenade.  (Cash and Card will be accepted)

The BBQ is one of our primary club fundraisers so we are keen to get it going again.  We are complying with COVID restrictions and are taking all precautions to ensure the safety of our club members and our customers. If you are interested either individually, or as a group (we need a minimum of 6 people on a shift) to help out with the BBQ, please let Claire, General Activities Director, know as she is working on the new roster.

The Clubroom Bar is also open every Sunday afternoon and all are welcome – it’s your club!  The bar is open from 12 noon till around 3 pm.  To comply with COVID social distancing we are limited to 20 people in the Clubroom, so it is on a first-come, first-in basis.
We are also pleased to say that our Clubroom Bar SIPS will be starting again on the last Friday of every month.  The bar will open from 6:30 pm on Friday 30th October and the same restrictions on numbers apply.  North Steyne Snack Shack are once again offering a 10% discount to members who order take away dinners on these nights.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Lifesaving

What a start to the season!  Well done,  all patrols have ticked off their first shift, some even on to their second! Jack Watt (Club Vice Captain) and I have been to each patrol and welcomed everyone back to the beach and gone through the changes to the way we will operate under COVID-19. On a personal note, I would like to say thank you all again for returning to our patch, it is great to see you all, we are a community membership-based club and without you we just don't work!

Further, we are aiming to support our members as best we can with more flexibility on patrols, this was discussed at our welcome back, and the key to this flexibility is great communication!

COVID-19 Safe Plan
Lifesaving at North Steyne has a COVIDSAFE plan which is kept with the patrol Standard Operating Procedures in the Patrol room.

Patrol Subs: "YOU get a Voucher!!!"
You may have seen that people who are putting their hand up to sub for a member who has asked are getting a food or drink voucher as a big thank you!!!!  Keep up the good work and look forward to your rewards!!

Upskill Incentive Program
A new initiative from Jack Watt, anyone who upskills this year IRB Crew, Driver, ARTC, Beach Management, etc will receive some special surf rescue kit!  You can't buy this kit.  You only receive it through upskilling!!!!  Reward items include Surf Rescue Hoodies, IRB Rash Vests, and PFD's plus many more!!!!

Further, this program will also be taken into consideration for the Patrol of the Year Awards - so let the upskilling begin!!!

Welcome Dave Guthrie - NEW IRB Captain
I would like to give a big shout out and welcome to Dave Guthrie for stepping into the IRB Captain role!

Dave has been a NS team member for many years and is back at the club after serving his country with the Army.  Dave brings a wide range of skills and unique insights into managing elements of Emergency Services that will translate well into his new role.  Dave will also be providing training to the IRBD's and IRBC's candidates this year with Richard Donaldson and I look forward to seeing the team in action.

If you have any questions or comments please email me directly, I look forward to speaking with you.
Dan Hillier
Club Captain

Education @ NS

Our education team have been very busy getting all members up to date with their compulsory skills maintenance requirements.  If you are still to complete your proficiency please contact our Chief Instructor's, Trae or Hanna via email.

The upcoming Bronze Medallion course filled up quickly due to a long waitlist of members who missed out last season because of COVID-19.  New course dates will be made available soon.  For all course details, please check our website's education section.

Nipper Holiday Camp
A fantastic day on the sand and in the water at Shelly Beach was had by 25 nippers in the holidays.  The pre-season camp gave Coach Tom an opportunity to bond with the kids and put them through some swimming training, fitness training (running the stairs x3) and the much anticipated board relay to the end of the day. A great day of healthy competition and FUN!   A big thank you to the water safety team and the parents who help make this happen!

Thank you to Age Managers & COVID Marshalls
A big thank you to all the parents who are stepping up on Sunday mornings to assist with Nippers as Age Managers.  You will have noticed too, the COVID Marshalls in the orange vests, there to assist with groups and COVID compliancy. If you would like to get involved and donate some time, we would really love to hear from you.

See you at the beach!

 Youth @ NS

This season we are running a scheduled Sunday (social) paddle for cadets on Sunday mornings from 8.30 am - 9.30 am. This is open to anyone who wants to come down to the beach and work on their skills at their own pace. Please meet on the beach outside the board shed at 8.25am and either Jodie, Jo or an assigned coordinator will register names as per our COVID safety plan and arrange board collection. You are also welcome to bring your own board if it’s not currently stored at the club.

Alternatively, you may like to join the Sunday 8am training session with the club coach or maybe you would like to volunteer for Nippers water safety on Sunday mornings between 9.20am-11.30am, like Ewan pictured below.  Note that you must be financial and proficient to use club equipment so please ensure your membership is up-to-date.
Good luck to all our HSC/IB students who are now on the exam home stretch. Don't forget to pop down to the beach for some fresh air and exercise to help maintain a healthy life balance.

For those whom are keen to continue to patrol but are unable to fully commit due to work, study, travel commitments, don't despair we have a new patrol initiative that we're rolling out over the summer holidays just for our Youth members, so stay tuned!

See you on beach!

Youth Director

 Competition @ NS

The competition officially kicks off this weekend with a Nippers Boards Carnival at Dee Why on Sunday. The surf boat crews also have their first competition coming up on 14 November at Newport! Best of luck to the A team, Boatettes, Buccaneers and Junior Crews!

Remember board training is on every Sunday morning 8 – 9am. Open to all SRC and Bronze Proficient members.

SAVE THE DATES: North Steyne is hosting two carnivals this season.
  • Nippers Carnival on Sunday 22nd November
  • Surf Boat Carnival on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th January 2021.
These two carnivals are major fundraising opportunities for the Club and without the amazing support of our members and volunteers, we would not be able to make both events possible. If you want to put your name down as a helper on the day or assist in the lead up for these events, contact the Carnival Committee.

See you on the Beach!
