Dear Members,

Summer is certainly upon us and we are in full swing back on our beach. There is training going on, competition has begun, the Nippers are in full force and training for our upcoming carnival. Best of all - our BBQ is up and running, thank you to our A and A- teams for kicking off our BBQs in such great style.

Our Clubroom too has had a makeover!  The ceiling has just been replaced by Council and the entire room is looking much better with a fresh coat of paint.  Thank you to Audrey and our Board Members for assisting here so that the construction works could take place safely!  Looking forward to a Sunday Session in the bar when the room re-opens.
Last week North Steyne was a national finalist for 2 awards in the Surf Life Saving Australia Awards of Excellence 2020. The 2 categories in which we were finalists were: Community Education Award for our Gaza Surf Life Saving Project; and, Assessor of the Year for our very talented Joe Mastrangello. While we did not win the ultimate prize, congratulations to all who did and they were truly deserving.

It is amazing what our surf lifesaving community does, and a special moment at the awards was the presentation of the Meritorious Awards for outstanding and brave rescues. The stories told of bravery exhibited by our fellow surf lifesavers was incredible. It was quite moving when the Port Campbell SLSC received one of these awards and Ross and Andrew Powell, the father and son who perished in a rescue in April 2019, were remembered. Sometimes we forget the important role we play in keeping our community safe, and we should all be very proud to be part of a movement where such sacrifices are made for others.

I would finally like to thank all our members for your patience as we navigate our new COVID world.  We appreciate you following all our guidelines and contributing to ensuring that North Steyne is COVID safe. Hopefully, we will see a relaxation of things over the next few months, and until then please stay vigilant, following our guidelines and instructions and above all remain safe and well.

See you at the beach!

We have had a very busy start to the season already and I take my hat off to all the PC's and Patrolling members who have stepped up with their patrols, organised subs or helped out when needed.

Last weekend we were short a few bronzies primarily due to HSC and IB focus and for the most part, the members reached out for subs, however we were caught short on a patrols. The call was quickly put out for assistance and I am very pleased to say we managed to cover the patrol.  A big thanks (and VOUCHERS)  must go to Kyra, Niels, Jono, Llewellyn, Josh Birley, Hanna, Trae and Dave Guthrie for their assistance.  It was fantastic to see the Team in action,  particularly with a couple of rescues of learner surfers stuck on the pipe and some first aids as well.

With that in mind it is the traditional time where we lose a few members due to exams and upcoming end of school, university etc, so if you can please ensure that you keep up the communication with your PC's, Jack Watt and myself when there are issues re patrols and subs.  Remember if you sub, YOU get a VOUCHER!!!!  - for food from the BBQ or a Drink at the bar (under 18 soft drinks, 18+ one standard drink)

Boaties Patrol
Recently the Boaties helped out with a full patrol. It was a great opportunity to get the Boaties all together, showing off their teamwork to cover the patrol. A big thanks to Michael B and all the Boaties for helping out, with any luck we may be able to get them to do another one later in the season!

New Patrol Captains
A big thank you to Lochie Van der Plumijm who is stepping up to take on Patrol 5. Lochie comes highly recommended from Patrol 13 and will be mentored by Tracey Hare-Boyd.  Emma Hillier is stepping up to run Patrol 7 - with Dad (myself) mentoring her in the role.

Upskilling Rewards!
As previously mentioned members who are going to take on higher awards such as Beach Management, ART, IRBC & IRBD will receive exclusive Merchandise for passing the courses. Look out for people in their new PFD, Rashies, Hoodies etc.  We encourage you all to go for a new qualification and get a reward!!!

If you have any questions or comments please email me directly, I look forward to speaking with you.

 Competition @ NS

We would like to welcome on board, our new Sponsor ‘NEDS, Australian Whisky’. Thanks to the efforts of Matt Gertenbach from the open men’s crew, NEDS whisky will be backing the Opens in the Ocean Thunder Professional series and also providing support to the entire boat section. Neds is an all Australian Whisky company based in Victoria. Watch out for their drinks in the bar in the near future.

Thank you to Col, Mike and the boys who worked tirelessly on removing the old decals and placing the new NED decals on over the past few weeks - just in time for the OT race last weekend at Collaroy.  How smart does the boat look? especially pleasing to see the boat name in all its' glory (named after our life member Keith Crampton, 'Crampo') Good Job boys!

A note from Surfboats:  Like a Mogwai in the movie Gremlins the boaties are back and have again multiplied. With our 2 Masters crews and 3 Opens/Reserves crews all returning, the boaties have ventured outside of the bar in search of fresh meat. Although still in their teething phases we have excitedly added a Junior Boys (managed by Euan) and a junior girls (managed by Mike B & David M). We are excited with the addition of juniors as it provides a nice pathway for junior club members to get involved in an exciting new sport while still staying involved with the Surf Club.  If you are keen to join in the excitement, please contact Mike B and Rob S today!

In other competition news, we are looking forward to the North Steyne Junior Water Carnival on Sunday 22nd November. Thanks in advance to all those volunteers who are stepping up to help make it a success!

Also, don't forget that board training is on every Sunday morning 8:00am – 9:00am. Open to all SRC and Bronze Proficient members.

See you on the Beach!

GYMNASIUM @ NS

The North Steyne Gym is open on a timetabled basis under strict COVID condtions.  If you would like to join the Gym there are some spaces available.  You must be a current financial member of North Steyne to join and the annual membership cost for active members is $100. This fee goes towards the  professional cleaning of the Gym and Shower rooms to enable us to keep them open.

Due to social distancing rules there is a maximum capacity of 5 people allowed in the gym at the one time. No one person is to train on their own, you must train with a friend or join a group.

Peta Kilgour, Swim and Fitness Coach is keen to run group fitness sessions in our gym on a Tuesday and /or Saturday mornings, please contact Peta if you are keen to learn more.

Junior members aged 16+ are allowed to use the gym once all relevant documentation has been signed and membership fee has been paid.

For more information, please contact Cath Hillier, Assistant Secretary and COVID liaison.

Nippers @ NS

North Steyne beach has been a hive of activity with 250+ nippers on Sunday mornings, our SRC group and nipper board training on Saturday mornings. It’s great to see so many new faces joining us and so many nippers returning season after season; having fun, always learning something new and improving their skills on the beach and in the water.

We have had two Carnivals already this season starting with Dee Why Board Carnival on 25th October.  We had the most North Steyne Competitors at a water carnival in over four years….with 28 North Steyne Nippers!!  For our U9s it was their first competition experience a few nerves but they all should be proud of their races!!  We had some top finishes in heats and individual points scores!  We are still waiting on Branch to put out the final point results.

Last Sunday was the Queenscliff Nipper  Beach Carnival.  We had 23 Nippers racing in sprints, flags and mixed relays.  Highlight of the day was our U10 Nipper, Felix Stephens, winning 1st place in Sprints and Flags!!   All the Nippers ran their hardest making it through multiple heats and to finals.   They will be working closely with Rubin Ruzicka, our new Sprint Coach over the following weeks preparing for the next Beach Carnival!

Thanks to all the parents who have volunteered to become age managers. Covid-19 rules mean that only age managers, water safety and club officers may be with the nippers during activities. Parents must maintain social distancing.

If you’d like to spend time with your nipper on the beach, think about volunteering as an age manager or water safety. If you’d like to get involved with the nippers as water safety, the next Bronze Medallion training group starts in the new year.

Remember to get TeamApp to keep up to date with our schedule of events; download the app from the App Store or google store. Since we are a surf based sport we are at the mercy of the elements which means water activities may be changed or cancelled at short notice. We will issue alerts via TeamApp if events change so that you don’t miss out.

See you at the beach!

Sunday Social Board Paddle 8.30am-9.30am now on every week
We are currently trialling a social paddle session each Sunday morning for those who want to catch up with North Steyne friends and work on their paddle skills at their own pace. Meet Jodie and/or Jo on the beach outside at the Board Shed at 8.30am each Sunday to organise your board (COVID restrictions apply to Board Shed entry), or to arrange a rescue board from the club.

Save the date! NSSLSC Cadet/Youth on the Club BBQ - 13th January 2021
Providing you with plenty of notice to work on your sausage cooking skills. Look out for the morning shift roster to be published on the Cadet Team App in coming weeks.

Water Safety Assistance Required
Each Saturday and Sunday mornings the club needs your help with SRC training, Nippers and Ripper Nippers. This is a great opportunity to share your knowledge and skills and gain credits for volunteer programs such as the Duke of Ed. For those that are seeking higher education placements in coming years this is also a valuable volunteer asset to add to your University applications. Please get in touch with Jodie via text 0411 261455 if you can assist for part or the whole morning. All offers of help will be greatly received.

Summer School Holidays SRC to Bronze Course
We are currently seeking expressions of interest for a condensed Cadet SRC-to-Bronze course to run over the January school holidays at North Steyne. Details TBC, however, it's likely the course will run for 4-5 days with an assessment on Day 5. Please get in touch with Jodie or contact the education team. Note that you must be aged at least 15 years on the day of the assessment and hold a current SRC Award.

See you on beach!

GET IN TOUCH
The COVID committee are still working hard to ensure we keep our guidelines up to date for your safety.  This week we had an inspection from NSW Health and we are pleased to share with you that we got a verbal tick of approval.  The inspector did emphasise the Social Distancing rule, especially at Nippers and upcoming events, so please we ask all members to be vigilant and obey the 1.5m rule.
Overall, Keep up the great work everyone! Keep an eye out for updated signage and remember only authorised entry to the club is still in operation until further notice.
