Dear Members,

It is hard to believe that the season is right around the corner and will kick off next month on Saturday, 26 September 2020. Thank you to all those who have registered for the season so far. Can I encourage you to do this as soon as possible as we are putting together our patrols and planning for what is expected to be a big summer.  Go straight to SLSA login to renew your membership and visit our Members Area on the website to review the fees, look at the new clothing range or subscribe to our newsletter and socials.
Will we be back to normal this season? The answer is – no, we will not. Like every aspect of life currently, we will be operating differently to ensure that we are all safe in a COVID environment.
Already we have done a significant amount of work at the Club to ensure we are COVID compliant and this work will continue throughout the season.

We will soon receive information from SLSNSW about how patrols will operate and we will provide you with more information at that time.
Before the season kicks-off, we will hold our AGM on Saturday, 12 September at 4:00pm at the Balgowlah RSL. Numbers will be restricted to this event and an invite with all the papers will be sent shortly.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all winners of our 2019-2020 season awards. A special congratulations to:
  • Euan Ramsey-Stewart, Club Person of the Year;
  • Jack Watt, Young Club Person of the Year;
  • Claire Oxlade, President’s Award; and
  • Patrol 3 for Patrol of the Year!
Thanks as well to Cath and Emma Hillier for putting together the awards videos – an excellent job and a great celebration.

Finally, good luck to all those North Steyne SLSSNB award winners who go on to SLSNSW Awards of Excellence 2020 which will be announced on Saturday, 29 August. Go North Steyne!

Stay safe and well,
Chris Gibbs Stewart

From the Treasurer

We are certainly in a very unusual and difficult time.  As with most businesses, we have seen the cancellation of most of our fundraising activities, the most significant, the deferral of our Ocean Swim in March.  We have also not been able to run the BBQ since that time and our Club Bar was also closed until last Sunday.

The good news is that we have qualified for a number of COVID grants, including the Federal Government's Boosting Cash Flow grant ($15,000 received to-date with a further $5,000 to come), JobKeeper to enable us to retain Audrey as our paid administrator and $2,869 from the NSW Government small business COVID-19 support grant program.

In addition, as you may have seen, in June the SLSNSW Board has approved a financial support package totalling almost $1.2 million to its clubs.  Our club has received 2 grants from this package, a COVID 19 Club Funding Package Grant of $10,669.75, and a Club Sports package COVID grant of $1,000.   These grants will be invaluable this season as we have been advised our major sponsor, Channel 9, will not be continuing its annual $10,000 sponsorship of our club due to COVID cutbacks.  Similarly, the Steyne Hotel has indicated that it is unlikely to be able to provide us with any sponsorship support this season.  If you know of any organisations that may be willing to provide sponsorship to our club, please contact us.

With our AGM coming up next month,  all positions on our Board roles are up for election.  I intend to stand again as Treasurer, for the last time.  I would therefore ask anyone interested in taking up the role in the future to nominate for the Assistant Treasurer role so that we have a good transition period.
Stay safe
Tony Falzarano

As winter is coming to an end, we are thinking all things North Steyne, we cannot wait to get back to the beach!

We have just completed our Gear Inspection and all in all we are in great shape.  A huge thank you to Kyra, Trae, Hannah, Ned and Dave who came and helped with the inspection.
Of course with COVID-19 restrictions still in play, Patrols may look a little different this year. More information is to come but rest assured your safety is paramount.  All hygiene and social distancing protocols will be outlined in detail and will be updated regularly to comply with the Government.

If you have any questions or comments please email me directly, I look forward to speaking with you.

Celebrating 40 years of Women in SLS

Last month we celebrated the 40th anniversary of women’s active involvement in Surf Life Saving, after being officially admitted on July 1st, 1980 as active members. Women were encouraged out of the “tea-room” and onto the beach, joining men to save lives, participate in competitions and administration, and carry out all the responsibilities and enjoyments of surf lifesaving as male members had done for 70 years prior.
Today, our NSSLSC membership is evenly split between males and females and we have our first female Bronze squad from 1981 to thank for paving the way forward: Lyndel Kernaghan, Patty Thomas, Gislaine Gautier, Irene Tsiropoulous, Evelyn Killick and Trainer, John Killick. Check out the framed picture in the hall the next time you are in at the club.
Sadly, we haven’t seen these ladies on the beach for a while, but we do have several female members who were recently acknowledged for achieving 500+ patrolling hours during their life-saving careers.

Congratulations to the following fabulous female NSSLSC members on their efforts (in alphabetical order): Rebecca Chapman, Jo Cooper, Lee Cooper, Dannii Edwards, Deb Foote, Jodie Frazer, Chris Gibbs-Stewart, Tracey Hare-Boyd, Maxine Peacock-Smith and Alex Salier.

Nipper News

Nippers will be back for season 2020-21 on Sunday 11th October. As the weather starts to warm up, we’re looking forward to seeing all our black and gold nippers back on the beach. Due to Covid-19, nippers may look a little different this season as we implement our Covid-19 plan to help keep everyone safe. Government health advice is subject to change, so we will keep you informed via email and TeamApp.

Enrolment days will be on Sundays 13th and 20th September from 9 am - 12 pm, FOR NEW MEMBERS ONLY, due to Covid-19 protocols limiting the number of people that we can accommodate in the Club. If you are a returning Nipper, please renew online. Note that, further information on how to purchase club clothing and parking permits will be published closer to the day.

Proficiency swims will be held at Manly ‘Boy Charlton’ Aquatic Centre on Saturdays 26th September and 10th October from 4-5.30pm; RSVP on TeamApp.

Winter board training is back on with our fantastic new coach Tom Bedingfield, again please check TeamApp for details.

If you are joining us for club events, please help everybody by sticking to some simple rules:
  • Stay home if feeling sick – this applies to children and parents.
  • The advice is ‘turn up, participate, and leave’ to reduce unnecessary contact.
  • No entry into the Club by parents or nippers. Coaches and Nipper Directors only have access to the Club. No access to Showers or Change Rooms.
  • Download the Covid-19 Safe App.
  • We have a QR code system in place for members to sign in each time you come to the Club.
  • Spacing of one person per 4m2 of space indoors and 1.5m outdoors/on the beach to allow for social distancing.
  • Bring your own board to reduce the sharing of equipment. If you need to use a Club board, you must clean it at the end of training with disinfectant.
  • Bring your own SLS pink Hi-Vis rashie – No Hi-Vis, no training. Do not share clothing.
  • Sanitise your hands upon arrival – hand sanitizer will be available at the back steps of the Club.
Remember to get TeamApp to keep up to date with our schedule of events; download the app from the App Store or google store. Since we are a surf-based sport, we are at the mercy of the elements which means water activities may be changed or cancelled at short notice. We will issue alerts via TeamApp if events change so that you don’t miss out.

See you on the beach!

Youth @NS

Are you wanting to pursue a coaching or mentor role, an accredited award as an official or referee, a leadership course or certification in the hospitality industry, but are short of funds?
Then read on!

North Steyne SLSC has secured grant funding to cover training expenses for our Youth members, aged 16-25 years and we are now seeking expressions of interest from our members who are keen to enhance their skills both on and off the beach. The club would cover the cost of course/training and in return, we would ask that these members share their talents and knowledge to benefit the rest of the North Steyne membership.
We have considered courses such as:
  • Sports Coach
  • Surf Sports Official
  • Barista Training*
  • RSA Certification and Training
  • AIM Leadership and Management
If you are keen to add any of the above to your CV and have your course fees covered, please send a submission here and outline how you would be able to help North Steyne SLSC once qualified. We will also accept submissions for any other desired courses if you can prove that the club will benefit!
All submissions will be reviewed by the board and will close 31 August, with decisions to be advised by late September 2020. Please contact Jodie Frazer if you have queries.
