Dear Members,

What a year it has been – filled with challenges, uncertainty and new ways of working, schooling and living.  As we say goodbye to 2020, it is time to reflect not only on the negatives, but also on the  positives. We got to spend more time with family, took care of some of those niggling house projects and really appreciated being able to connect.  And, when you look it at, we are certainly lucky – lucky that we have things relatively under control with the pandemic, lucky that we live in Australia, and lucky to have a great community at North Steyne.

Thank you to all our wonderful members who have supported us throughout the year. From our Nippers to those who patrol, train, assess, compete or help on the BBQ. Special thanks to all the North Steyne Directors who have all gone the extra mile to ensure this season kicked-off and that  we continue to operate and serve the community on North Steyne Beach.

Please join us this Sunday for Christmas celebrations. Kicking off with Nippers and a special visit from a famous bearded man, we will then have lunch and drinks to celebrate the holidays. RSVP here for lunch, get in quick as space is limited.

On behalf of the North Steyne Board, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and health New Year.

Bring on 2021!
Chris Gibbs Stewart

A farewell to Audrey

With mixed emotions we bid Audrey Bruen, our trusted Administration Manager of seven years, farewell.
Audrey has been an integral part of our club administration, working closely with board directors ensuring membership is always up to date and that all the bills are paid, along with many other duties in the background.  Audrey is taking up a full time role next year and we wish her every success with this.
Thank you Audrey, you will be missed! You will always be a part of the North Steyne family!

A message from Jack!

Jack "Sutho" Sutherland, second from left with his fellow A team members
Hi everyone, Jack here!

It is so nice to be back on BBQ after all these months. It is nice to see old mates, have a laugh and a few beers after. Both A teams are now back on duty.  These teams are made up of Life, Distinguished and Outstanding members and Active Reserves.  We have a great time on BBQ and make money for the club.
Pictured above, our A- team enjoying a beer or two after their last BBQ shift.  Good times sharing jokes, stories and making new memories!   Such a testament to what North Steyne is all about - Community!

We are now looking for two more A teams to take the burden off the active members.  All you need is five or six mates to make up a team. You will not regret it.

I hope to see you soon on the BBQ.
Jack Sutherland
Deputy President

We are gearing up for the Christmas "silly" season already and hopefully we will see a relaxed holiday vibe at the beach.  Jack Watt and I have been getting around to the patrols and seeing how they are going from a members perspective. There are a lot of great people at North Steyne and that is evident at any patrol. It is brilliant to see the ethos of a North Steyne Team, of service and dedication to our patch in each patrol and in our members.  We are lucky to have you all!

Time is running out for skills maintenance sessions (proficiency checks) so please ensure that you complete your online element as a matter of urgency and commit to a time over the next two weekends to do your wet/dry components.  We need to have everyone signed off before the 31/12/2020!!
It has also been really fantastic to see the effort people are going to to engage with other members for subs when they are unable to attend patrol.  I also think the VOUCHERS's for subs has been a real winner! SUB = VOUCHER for a drink (hard or soft) at the bar or a free feed at the BBQ, so help a fellow member out.
If you are spotting some or the new surf merchandise around on the beach, it is a gift from the club on completion of a higher award, so if you have always wanted to upskill - go for it! and the club will reward  you with a choice of clothing to choose from!

Dave Guthrie, IRB Captain, has been looking into North Steyne / Surf Rescue branded wetsuits for sale for North Steyne members, consisting of spring suits and a mix of steamers. They look fantastic as pictured below.  If you are interested in purchasing one, please email here.
With the holidays coming up, I would like to let you know that we have extended the festive "goodies" hampers. So now if you are patrolling on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day you will all get to share in a hamper as a thank you from the club for your commitment to Team North Steyne!

Finally, we are about to welcome over twenty new Bronzies to the Team! This group has been outstanding in their course and were successful last week in passing their assessments.  See pictures below. The new members have been allocated to patrols so keep your eyes out, introduce yourself and please make them welcome.
Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible for the Historical Club Photo organised for Sunday.  See you on the beach!
Dan Hillier
Club Captain

If you are interested in competing (U17 / U19 / Open / Masters) please do reach out to me. This will ensure we have you entered for the carnival. We are always looking for members to join our competition team, in particular Life Saving events: Champion Lifesaver, First Aid and Patrol Competition!

Our next big event at the club will be the Boat Carnival on 23 and 24 January 2021 – as always, to make this event a success we need help from our amazing members! Please fill out this form to volunteer, even for an hour or two!  It is an awesome weekend to be in Manly, and to feel part of a good old aussie community!

Board training is held every Sunday 8am – 9am. All fitness levels welcome! Pack goggles and pink rashie.

Junior Water Carnival Success
On Sunday 22nd November, North Steyne hosted for the second year running the Junior Water carnival.

Despite the COVID restrictions in place, the carnival had the highest number of registered competitors for this season to date, with close to 500 nippers from U9 through to U14, from clubs within northern beaches branch, but also some competitors from Sydney branch, such as North Bondi, South Maroubra and even a competitor from Warilla-Barrack Point club. here to read more along with some great photos from the day

Good luck to the three Surfboat crews rowing this Saturday in round 4 of the SLSSNB Boat Carnival at Long Reef.  If you are in the area, take a look and give our crews a cheer!
Our new junior girls crew "The North Steyne Shenanigans" are busy training for the Collaroy Young Guns Carnival on January 10, 2021. Liv, Sarah, Chloe, Abbey and Maya are working very hard with their coach Dave McGuire, pictured right, Good Luck Girls!
Finally, join us for our inaugural Twilight Thursdays at the club. Meet at 6pm out the front of the club house with your swimmers, googles and hi-vis rashie. Some cans will be set up for a social paddle and swim course and from 7pm will make our way up to the club house for a cold beverage. This will be a great opportunity to catch up with fellow members whilst enjoying some swimming and brushing up on board paddling skills – all fitness levels are welcome. Open to Bronze proficient members. We will run this through January to take advantage of daylight savings and perfect water temperature. If this pilot is a success we can keep it running through to February. First date will be Thursday 7th January 2021.

See you on the Beach!

Competition Director

Nippers @ NS

It was all hands on deck for our club to host the Junior Beach & Water Carnival on Sunday 22 November. Thank you to our team, especially Sarah Lally, for all their hard work in the lead-up and all those who contributed by helping to set up, do water safety, pack up, BBQ and all the thousand other tasks that needed doing …. and got done.

We had 39 North Steyne kids competing on the day.  The kids loved competing at a water carnival on their beach. Their hard work and training is showing some awesome results.  A big thanks to Coach Tom Bedingflied who is instrumental in our team's performance.   We had kids in most A & B finals with relay teams in most age groups.    Highlights included - Felix Stephens U10 Boys 2nd place Boards.  Iggy Jenkins won the U10 B final.  In the U9 Boys Boards - Lucas Bell 3rd & Joel Colwell 5th place.  All of our U9 girls made the A finals with Milli Crofton placing 5th in the final. Charlie Colwell placed 1st in U12 B final.  Rory Pennie made it through to the A Final in U11s with Kody Burrows 1st in B final and Tom Bell 2nd in B final.

Last weekend we had 29 kids competing at Fast & Furious Board Carnival at Freshwater.   With flat conditions the kids had to paddle fast as the waves were few and far between.   In U9 boys we had four competitors in the A final with Lucas Bell placing 3rd and Joel Colwell 4th place overall.  The U9 boys relay team of Lucas Bell, Joel Colwell and Joel Robinson placed 2nd! All of our U9 girls made the A final with Milli Crofton coming in 5th. Our U9 girls, Milli Crofton, Zoe Lancaster and Addison Burrows placed 4th overall in the U9 girls relay.  Felix Stepens placed  3rd in U10 boys.    The U10 boys relay team of Felix Stephens, Iggy Jenkins and Harvey Collins paced 3rd overall.     The black and gold caps were top in most races and it was exciting to watch!

All of our board competitors are training hard with the focus on Manly Nipper Nats as the next Carnival prior to Branch Championships.

Our U14 cohort have their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) assessment on Saturday 19 December. We have the largest group of SRC candidates seen for a while and many of the candidates have been in nippers at North Steyne since U6s. Good luck to all the candidates and we look forward to seeing you on patrol in the new year.

Congratulations to the group of nipper parents who obtained their Bronze Medallion this month; no doubt some of you are fitter than you have been for years! We’re really proud of your effort and the nippers will love to have the extra water safety so everyone can get a go in the water, be safe and have fun.

The last day of Nippers and our Christmas celebration is on Sunday 20 December. We have been in touch with the North pole and can confirm that we will have a visit from you know who but due to covid restrictions we will not be able to have our traditional Christmas feast in the club hall.

Nippers will return on Sunday 10 January 2020. Enjoy the break
