More than 1,000 children attend Live Fit Challenge

ASAS Ohio hosted its annual Live Fit Challenge on Friday, July 27th at The Ohio State University French Field House. More than 1,000 local children, ages 5-14, participated in the one-day health and fitness event.

During the event, ASAS Ohio challenged participants to learn about healthy eating habits, and to experience the sports and enrichment stations offered throughout the day. Eighteen different stations were offered including tennis, fencing, zumba, street hockey and gymnastics.

Dennis Walters, an honorary lifetime member of the PGA of America and national ambassador for First Tee Golf, served as the guest speaker this year. Dennis, who is paralyzed from the waist down, talked to participants about resilience, fulfilling your dreams and remaining active despite your circumstances.

ASAS Ohio hosts its first CampUs at Denison University

More than 40 all-stars got a glimpse into life as a college student through CampUs®, a middle to high school transition camp hosted by After-School All-Stars (ASAS) Ohio.

CampUs® took place June 25th – June 30th at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.  The unique over night camp was created to better prepare seventh and eighth grade students for high school through workshops, trainings and group activities.
During CampUs®, students lived in a Denison University dormitory for the week and participated in daily classes on high school study skills, the college application process and leadership. The free camp also included career panels with local professionals, a community service project, and mentoring sessions with successful college students.
For many of the students who participated, it was their first time stepping foot on a college campus. The program aims to show them an alternative to dropping out of high school, and equips them with the skills they need to plan their future. CampUs® is part of the After-School All-Stars national initiatives.

ASAS Ohio heads to Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY

The ASAS Ohio martial arts students headed to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York earlier this summer. The trip was in partnership with former martial arts world champion and ASAS Ohio program provider, Terrance Tokey Hill. Approximately 28 students made the journey to Lake Placid where they trained and lived like Olympians for one week.
The original training center opened in November of 1982, and the present facility opened in 1989. The training center assists athletes in a variety of Olympic sports. It also provides assistance to a number of affiliated sports organizations and disabled sports organizations.
While a majority of their time was spent improving their martial arts skills, the students also had a chance to meet former and current Olympians including bobsledding and freestyle skiing medalist. The visit also included a special tour of the arena where the 1980 U.S. men’s hockey team won its gold medal.

More than 40 all-stars attended CampUs.
