All-Star Ambassadors visit Black Creek Bistro Restaurant

To celebrate completing etiquette lessons, student ambassadors were treated to a three-course meal at Black Creek Bistro. Throughout the year, each ambassador completed five lessons focusing on dining, introductions and conversation etiquette.  The dinner provided students with an opportunity to practice all of the skills they've learned.

Mrs. Nora Cline of Modern Manners provided the etiquette lessons free to the ambassadors. Cline created the first Modern Manners etiquette program in 1990 as a program instructor at the Worthington Parks and Recreation Department. For 19 years, Nora has presented a variety of etiquette and character enrichment programs to groups in the community. We would like to thank Mrs. Cline for volunteering her time to help our All-Stars refine their etiquette skills.

Modern Manners will return as a program provider for the 2012-2013 school year.

Global Youth Service Day 2012

On April 28, more than 100 All-Stars gathered at the Franklin Park Conservatory Adventure Center to complete service projects to enrich their communities.  Students focused their projects in the areas of energy conservation, animal protection, racism, hunger and violence. Projects completed included planting seedlings for a community garden, and making blankets to donate to victims of domestic violence.

Global Youth Service Day is a national campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning. Established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day is the largest and longest-running service event in the world, and is the only day of service dedicated to children and youth.

After-School All-Stars Ohio partnered with the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, Franklin County Dog Shelter, Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks, the YWCA Family Center for Global Youth Service Day.
Students from Columbus City Preparatory School for Boys focus their service projects on protecting the environment.
Light switches serve as reminders to turn off the lights.

After-School All-Stars Ohio Welcomes Will Allen

After-School All-Stars Ohio is excited to welcome professional football player, Will Allen, as our newest celebrity ambassador. As an ambassador, Allen will work with students and teach them about living a healthy lifestyle and achieving their goals.

Allen, a native of Dayton, graduated from the Ohio State University with a degree in communications, where he received numerous honors and won a national championship. He is now entering his ninth season in the NFL, and his third with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Will Allen recently visited Southmoor Middle School and spent time getting to know some of our students. We are excited for more of our students to hear Will’s inspiring message in the future.

Programming Spotlight: Tokey Hill Martial Arts

Tokey Hill, a martial arts world champion, has provided programming for all six of our school sites.  Hill’s goal is to teach students discipline and focus through martial arts. Recently, students at Southmoor Middle School were able to advance to yellow belts.

Tokey Hill’s karate background includes being the first World Champion in Karate from the United States, an honor he took home at the World Karate Federation (WKF) World Championships in Madrid, Spain in 1980 and held for 23 years.  Since that time, only two other U.S. athletes have won the World Championship.

As part of the Olympic Committee, Hill and his staff will take a group of All-Stars to the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York. While at the training center, students will live and train like Olympians while improving their martial arts skills.
