SLHS Business Academy Sweeps SAP Hackathon
The San Leandro High School Academy of Business and Finance had students on both winning teams at the NFTE /SAP Innovators Hack-A-Thon held on Saturday, November 5.
The Hack-A-Thon attracted over 65 kids from 6 local high schools attend, along with 35 mentors, most from SAP). The kids were split into teams of 3-4 and assigned a mentor.
Each team was then asked to develop a mobile application in the areas of Sports (preventing sports injuries) or Health (reducing student stress or improving student nutrition).
The winning team created an application to provide healthier lunch choices to high school students, which was created for cafeterias across the US to help shorten lines at high school cafeterias, students pre-ordering their healthy meals, lowering overhead and allowing pre-orders/ pre-pays to be fulfilled more quickly. SLHS students Carlo Amaro (Jr.) and Jodie Antonio (Sr.) were part of the winning team.
The second place team designed an App called "Paused" which allows a person to pause certain distracting apps that keep us from being productive. As a time management tool, it would help us pause the use of social media, allowing a student to focus on homework or other work related tasks. Another use would be to stop drivers from distraction while they are driving. Members of this team were SLHS junior Minh Nguyen and sophomore Alvaro Rodriguez.
SAP has been involved with NFTE for the past 4 years, sponsoring hack-a-thons, tech challenges and design thinking sessions. SAP has partnered with NFTE, because they share a common goal, which is to provide low-income kids the opportunity to participate and excel in the digital economy, particularly in Silicon Valley.
