PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTM Research Reserve), in collaboration with the Marineland Dolphin Adventure, invites the public to a free lecture, "Expanding Research in Pristine Pellicer Creek," on Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 10-11 a.m. at the new lecture location: Marineland Dolphin Adventure.

Drs. Todd Osborne, biogeochemist and faculty member at the University of Florida Whitney Lab Marineland, and GTM Research Reserve Research Coordinator Nikki Dix will discuss the past, present and future of research in Pellicer Creek, the biggest tributary of the Matanzas River. They will also provide an update on future plans for drawing more scientists from around the world to engage in understanding this critical ecosystem.

The location of research facilities on Pellicer Creek will provide a rare combination of fresh, brackish and salt water, and an opportunity to conduct experiments with different salinities in an outdoor lab imitating the natural ecosystem. The creek and its watershed have a strong influence on the health of the estuary, so it is crucial for scientists and managers to understand how the creek functions and how it's connected. It's rare to find a watershed in Florida like the one surrounding Pellicer Creek, more than 90 percent undeveloped. With more than local interest, research on this system has global significance as scientists try to understand ecosystem processes and values in a relatively untouched, natural area.

The program is one of an ongoing Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month lecture series designed to help inform the public about their coastal natural world. These events are free, so space is limited. Reservations can be made online here or call 904-823-4500 for more information.

Please arrive at the Marineland Dolphin Adventure Gift Shop by 9:45 a.m. to receive a wristband for free admission to Marineland to enjoy the park afterwards.
