Keep Houston Beautiful Day is this Saturday, April 10th! For the past 43 years, Keep Houston Beautiful has empowered and educated Houstonians to take greater responsibility for enhancing their environment to create a cleaner and healthier city. We are so excited to participate in this annual event. Like many of you, some of my fruit trees were casualties of the winter storm, inspiring us to collaborate with Keep Houston Beautiful and the District E team on a fruit tree giveaway!

WHERE: Ellington/Clear Lake Recycling Center (246 Loop Rd, Houston, TX 77034)
WHEN: Saturday, April 10, 2021
STARTS: 9:00 A.M.
ENDS: When all 150 trees have a found a new home

If you have questions regarding the giveaway or volunteering, please feel free to contact Hannah Cobb at or 713-245-9006.
CITY BUDGET TIME is approaching! It’s time to fill out this year’s YOUR 2 CENTS survey. Houston City Council and city departments are currently analyzing how to spend the city’s $5 billion operating budget. Of this $5 billion, roughly half is the tax-supported (property and sales tax) general fund. The other half represents enterprise funds - city operations supported by fees and charges (water, sewer, streets, drainage, airports). The city has a separate capital budget which will be adopted this summer.

This fiscal year, Houston City Council will face a tough budget process due to current economic conditions caused by COVID-19. While the operating budget is the most significant legislative measure passed by council, there is very little public engagement in the process. By completing this survey, you are helping me understand how you want your tax dollars prioritized for spending. The survey focuses on tax-supported general fund spending.

TESTING: If you need to be tested for COVID-19, please refer to the HHD list of free testing locations for this week.

VACCINATIONS: On March 29, the state expanded COVID-19 vaccination eligibility to all Texans, 16 and older. (All vaccines are authorized for people age 18 and older. The Pfizer vaccine is authorized for people 16 and older.)

There are many ways to sign up for vaccines, so the city recommends you take your best shot at ending the pandemic by taking the first vaccine available to you.
  • If you have a primary care physician, the Houston Health Department (HHD) recommends you first call your doctor to see if vaccines are being offered at your doctor’s office.
  • HHD continues to release vaccine appointments when provided with additional supply. Sign up for notifications on AlertHouston by registering for "HoustonRecovers" alerts. HHD also posts new appointments on their Facebook and Twitter
  • Harris County Public Health (HCPH) has continued to operate an online waitlist, which you may register for here.
  • The Texas Department of State Health Services has launched a Texas Public Health Vaccine Scheduler, which allows you to sign up for all state distribution hubs through one portal. This includes:
  • Pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens, and HEB are also offering the vaccine. Please check with your local pharmacy to see if this may be an option for you.
SECOND DOSES: If you have already received your first dose of the vaccine from HHD and need to schedule your second dose, a text message and email for your second dose appointment will be sent 24-48 hours before the recommended due date. If you are overdue for your second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, you can email or call (832) 393-5190 Monday-Saturday from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. to schedule your second dose appointment.
The Hire Houston Youth (HHY) job board is open for applications. The City of Houston will hire up to 500 young Houstonians interested in public service, aged 16-24, for internships this summer. These internships will pay $10 an hour, 32 hours a week, for up to eight weeks. Additionally, the HHY job board includes opportunities in the private and philanthropic sectors. If you know someone interested in applying, please direct them to the HHY website.
