Chronic Sleep Loss: A Growing Public Health Crisis
Dr. James Thomas outlines in the Winter Issue of MCMS Physician  that a later school start time could solve this growing public health crisis for teens. Many studies have documented that the average adolescent in the United States is chronically sleep deprived and pathologically sleepy. Adolescents who do not get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight, suffer from depressive symptoms, engage in unhealthy risk behaviors and perform poorly in school. To learn more about the 70 school districts (approx. 1,000 schools) that addressed this health crisis, read the full report

Physicians Say Advocacy Essential for Good Patient Care
Physicians John and Alieta Eck will share how their political advocacy may change the face of medicine for physicians and their patients in New Jersey during the 2016 Annual MCMS Membership Dinner, June 7, William Penn Inn, Route 202 and Sumneytown Pike, Gwynedd. Frustrated by the inadequacy of New Jersey's health insurance system, Drs. Eck founded the Zarephath Free Clinic. The center gives physicians an opportunity to revert back to the old model of donating time each month to care for the poor and uninsured. Additionally, Jay A. Rothkopf, MD will be installed as the new president, and MCMS will honor 9 physicians who have practiced medicine for 50 years. The honorees are:
  • Randall W. Bell, MD, FACS
  • Richard J. Carella, MD
  • Albert T. Derivan, MD
  • Anthony J. Fugaro, DO
