A Message from Gretchen
Dear Friends,

Happy January!

Our team has been all over the state in these first weeks in January, and the work we are seeing has impressed us deeply. From Red Oak to Brownsville, from Beaumont to Ector County, Abilene to Valley View, DeSoto to Manor, students all over are benefiting from their teachers’ passion and commitment to learning, and we salute you all.

We’re already deep into the new semester, and we hope your work is bringing you a healthy balance of joy and challenges. In my corner of the world, I’m excited that our new book, Text Structures from Poetry, is almost in our hands! We’re also working on an all-English version of Maureen Ucles’s masterpiece, ¡Andale Ya!

If you’re around San Antonio on February 20, save the date for our celebration of Text Structures from Poetry at StreetFareSA at 7:00 p.m. What could be more poetic than readings from some of our student contributors while we munch on food truck delicacies?

Meanwhile, if you need a jolt of goodness, sign up for one of the February workshops with the new poetry book. Jennifer Martin will join me to demonstrate her exciting work with reading question stems, and Laura Van Prooyen will share her poetry experience with us as well.

Poetry for STAAR Workshops

The new book is out, and there's a Poetry for STAAR Workshop coming to a Texas town near you!

Gretchen Bernabei and Laura Van Prooyen have put together a wonderful new process to “pop the hood” on a poem to discover what makes it work, using text structures to unlock the engine of a poem.

We have 3 workshops lined up for February:
Houston, Thursday, Feb. 13
Richardson, Tuesday, Feb. 18
New Braunfels, Tuesday, Feb. 25
Join us to receive a copy of Text Structures from Poetry, with 50 classroom-ready lessons, as well as access to a TEKS alignment document.

Great Essays to Share

We’re building up our 2019 treasury of high-scoring STAAR essays, and we need your help!

The current collection includes a good number of essays from English I and English II, but only a few from grades 4 and 7. Please send us your score-point-8 essays from last year (especially 4th and 7th) and we will add them to this treasury of 8s.
