Description: Culture is an integral part of how we shape our behaviors towards health and wellbeing. To educate about healthy eating and disease management and prevention, nutrition professionals are tasked with meeting the needs of people from different cultures and beliefs. Most often, however, they are challenged by limited knowledge, tools and resources to offer care in a culturally competent and informed manner. With the heterogeneity of American Muslims there is a plethora of unique food practices which are guided by shared religious laws, but influenced by cultural differences. During this webinar we will explore the diversity of Muslim culture, describe some Muslim holidays, beliefs and practices that effect nutritional status of patients. We will also look at some of the challenges to weight management within the Muslim communities in the US.
