It's Leap Year 2020 so we had one extra day of photojournalism to work with and, depending on which weather-prognosticating groundhog you believe, Spring should be just around the corner!

So, without further delay, here is a look back at the action this month!
Lady Vikings lose a heart-breaker in first round of state tourney
Southern Nash tops Union Pines, 45-43
Feb. 25, 2020 - CAMERON, N.C. - It was one heck of a season but it ended for the Union Pines Lady Vikings as they dropped a 45-43 heartbreaker to Southern Nash High School in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2020 3A Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. The Lady Vikings finished the season 19-8 overall, 9-1 in the 3A Tri-County 6 conference (regular season and conference tourney champs), and before this game, had 11 straight wins.

For the fourth year in a row, the Lady Vikings have clinched a regular-season conference championship and for the third year in a row, the Lady Vikings also win the conference tournament championship.

Lady Vikings claim third consecutive conference championship
Lady Vikes cruise past Harnett Central
Feb. 19, 2020 - CAMERON, N.C. - A familiar storyline played out as the Lady Vikings faced Harnett Central again in the 3A Tri-County 6 Conference Championship tournament for the third time in a row.

The result was the same as Union Pines cruised to a 52-32 victory, claiming their third regular season and conference tournament championship in the 3A Tri-County 6 Conference.

Actual consecutive titles dates back to the 2016-17 season when the Lady Vikings won the 3A Cape Fear Valley Conference regular-season title with an 11-1 conference record compared to Terry Sanford's 9-3. However, Terry Sanford won the conference tournament championship.

Lady Vikings knock off Southern Lee, 55-20, in conference semi-final
Feb. 18, 2020 - CAMERON, N.C. - The late-season win streak continued as the Union Pines Lady Vikings easily took care of business in the 3A Tri-County 6 Conference Tournament semi-final.

Lady Vikings roll to regular-season title;
Viking men finish season strong

Lady Vikes dump Western Harnett, 61-9; Viking men outlast Eagles, 70-57
Feb. 13, 2020 - CAMERON, N.C. - The Union Pines women and men pulled off their second sweep at home in as many weeks as Western Harnett fell to the surging Vikings squads.

It may have been Senior Night for Kaley Evans, Molly Schmitz, and Kaylie Martin but it was the Lady Vikings bench who grabbed the spotlight as t
hey cruised to their third consecutive 3A Tri-County 6 regular-season conference title in a dominating 61-9 scoring-fest. The ladies finished the regular season at 9-1 in conference and 17-7 overall.

The Viking men had more of a challenge but in the end, outlasted the Eagles, 70-57. The win secured fourth-place heading into the conference tournament the week of Feb. 18-21, 2020.

Vikings Sweep Lee County
Lady Vikes roll, Viking men need last-minute miracle
Feb. 4, 2020 - CAMERON, N.C. - The Union Pines women and men pulled off the sweep of Lee County at Bob Ward Gymnasium.

The Lady Vikes were never really in danger as they rolled the Lady Yellow Jackets 63-41. The win solidified their hold on first place in the 3A Tri-County 6 Conference with three games remaining.

The Vikings-Yellow Jackets men's game was a different story. After leading early, the Vikes fell behind for most of the second half but not so far they couldn't stay in the hunt. With less than :11 second left in the game and trailing by two (47-45), Jalen Eberhart sank a 3-pointer from the corner giving the Vikings a slim 47-48 lead with :7.4 seconds left. Archie Chandler sealed the win at the hitting the front end of a 1-and-1 with :4 seconds remaining.

Southern Pines drops Asheville, 36-20
Win makes up for a 29-25 loss in October
Feb. 8, 2020 - SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - The Southern Pines Big Cones took care of business this time around, handing Asheville Rugby Football Club a 36-20 loss.

The win gives each team a season split after Asheville dropped the Big Cones, 29-25 in October.

The final home match in the
Carolinas Geographic Rugby Union regular season is March 14 when they host the Charlotte Rugby Football Club, a perennial Division 2 powerhouse.
