July 2020 - Vol. 1, No. 7

From the fields to the links!

Two sports assignments in one month! I still can't believe it!

July featured the second round of the War Horse Event Series (WHES) at Carolina Horse Park. That was followed by the US Kids Golf World Teen Championship 2020 at Pinehurst Resort, Longleaf Golf & Family Club, and other area courses.

Maybe these are the first steps of getting back to life as we once knew it, with some modifications.

Gill wins U.S. Kids Golf World Teen Championship (15-18 Boys)

Deitrek Gill, 16, of Wellington, Kansas, won the U.S. Kids Golf World Teen Championship (Boys 15-18). Gill’s three-day scores 71-72-72 (215) earned him the championship by two strokes. The first two rounds were played on Pinehurst No. 4 while the final round was featured on the famed Pinehurst No. 2 course.

The awards ceremony was held at the Longleaf Golf and Family Club, home to the U.S. Kids Golf Academy. Each year, the World Teen Championship welcomes golfers ages 13—18 to seven championship courses in the Pinehurst area. These courses, this event, and the community as a whole have provided a stage for golf’s next generation of stars to shine.

War Horse Event Series continued in July

July meant more equestrian action at Carolina Horse Park and the War Horse Event Series and I was again on assignment for ZUMA Press.

For the second straight month, the series continued July 11-12 under strict COVID-19 protocols.

Like June, more the 300 riders and their horses converged on the park as the WHES continued its hopefully uninterrupted march to the November championship.

As an added bonus, here is a short video from July WHES.

Closing Thoughts:

Who is missing this?

The images above are what most every high school student at North Moore, Pinecrest, and Union Pines was hoping to see again this year. Heck, even many families were hoping to see this.

But as it stands right now, Friday night lights will have to wait a few more weeks. Or, I dare say a few more months.

We should be a mere three weeks away from the start of the 2020 NCHSAA High School football season, but apparently, COVID-19 threw a penalty flag that no one was even remotely anticipating a year ago.

Instead of looking at 1st and Goal from the 1-foot line, we're now faced with 4th and long from locker room.

Here is looking to a brighter future underneath the Friday Night Lights very soon.
