Nov. 2021 - Vol. 2, No. 11

Leading Off:
Brace yourselves! Winter sports are coming!

The Winter sports season is upon us, and thankfully November was pleasantly quiet.

Of course, now that Thanksgiving is over, the multitudes of non-heavenly hosts will descend upon the streets and stores as the crush of Christmas shopping begins.

The hardwoods once again are alive with squeaks of shoes on basketball courts and the slams of bodies hitting wrestling mats echoing in gyms throughout the Sandhills.

Maybe it's just as well that November was relatively quiet after the onslaught of multiple fall sports events near the end of October.

However, that didn't mean there were no images to be made in November!

Shall we take a look?

Forward this email to someone who will wait until the last minute to do their Christmas shopping!

"Blackout sportstraits" return

Women's and Men's basketball plus a wrestling debut
It seems like I just made basketball blackout sportstraits just a couple of months ago.

It was December 2020 (forever known as the COVID sports season), but it does seem like it was a few months ago.

But a year has brought more experience for me and improved lighting gear for you, the parents, and your student/athletes. Thanks, F.J. Westcott, for making FANTASTIC gear for my photography repertoire and kit bag.

On Nov. 14, the Union Pines women's and men's cagers hit the court for their photo sessions. Assistant Coaches Felicia and Zach Marks and basketball moms Erin Rembert and Shawana Faulk were AWESOME photo assistants.

Sarah Adams, Aaliyah Balser, Laya Faulk, and Gianna Silvestri are this year's women's senior class. Griffin Booker, Stevenson Haskell, Tyson Hise, Jameson Rembert, Isaiah Robinson, and Kelby Wright round out the men's senior class.

The following weekend, four seniors from the Viking wrestling team stepped in under the lights. This session was their first time with me, and thanks to assistance from Coach Brian Gray and wrestling mom Angie DeVries, the session was a success. This year's wrestling senior class are Kellen DeVries, Gaige Lloyd, Aiden McCafferty, and David Worley.

Vikings split home-opener with Corinth Holders

After sweeping the Jack Britt Buccaneers the night before on the road, Union Pines returned to Bob Ward Gymnasium for their first home games of the year against the Corinth Holders Pirates.

Unfortunately, the outcome was not the same: the men fought back to win 66-58 while the ladies came up on the wrong end of the score, falling 63-34.

Isaiah Robbins led the Vikings with 17 points and 5 boards, Kelby Wright with 14 points, and Jack Adair added 12 points and 7 rebounds. Demari Patterson pulled down the double-double with 10 points and rebounds.

Aaliyah Balser led the Viking women with a double-double (21 points and 18 rebounds), Meghan McCaskill with 8 points and 8 boards, and Sarah Adams with 8 rebounds.

Both teams head out on the road after Thanksgiving for road games at Southwest Randolph (Nov. 30) and return for a two-game homestand with Western Harnett (Dec. 1) and Senior Night against Montgomery Central (Dec. 3).

Parting Shots:
Papa is the name, and grandpapa is my game!

On Nov. 7, Natalie and I welcomed our first grandchild, Liam Zachary Hale, to the world.

By the time you are reading this, we will be well on our way to finally meet him in person.

Many of you have asked about him, and even some have given me grandparenting advice. The latter is definitely appreciated since, like parenting, I don't believe grandparents are issued a manual of what to do and not to do. But I think we have a pretty good idea!

I joked with one of my "day job" co-workers that I expect to hold Liam for the first five minutes we're there and the last five before we leave. All the time in between will be grandma Natalie's time, but I'm prepared to sneak in a hug and some Papa time any chance I can get. After all, grandma will have to take a nap sometime!

I've been called many names over the years, some not so flattering or fit to print. But being called Papa is the best name yet! I even have a shirt that says so!

Brace yourselves! Grandbaby Liam images will be filling our social media timelines very soon!

Until then, be safe out there!
