This last week has been a busy week of organizing. Several community groups put on a very successful Families Belong Together/Madres Unidas/Mothers United rally at VanderVeer on June 30. Over 700 attended, despite the extreme heat. There were great people and great signs!
On Monday, July 2nd, QCI organized a "Reunite Families Now" Rally outside the offices of Senators Grassley and Ernst. 120 people came to demand that immigrant families be reunited and treated with dignity.
Quad Cities Interfaith is working to unify the member organizations affiliated with our work of "Creating a More Just Society." Below you can find articles and events of interest to members of our community. Also, please note the schedule of Task Force Meetings. You are welcome to join us at any.
If you would like more information or would like to get more involved, call 563-322-4910 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Despite the hard work of our caring community, at least one gentleman (one that was in ICE custody at the time of his hearing, and the Federal prosecutor didn't inform ICE of the hearing) was deported. He did not get his due process in court, but his family--and the family of others--will still be at the Federal Courthouse in Davenport
Monday, July 9
9 a.m. (arrive early, if possible)
131 E. 4th St.
These families need to know our community supports them. If you are a leader of a faith-based organization, please wear your vestments.
Again, this is not a protest or rally, it is a sign of our solidarity and loving support for these families.
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities (UUCQC) has voted to become a sanctuary congregation. We are willing to host an undocumented individual or small family who is at risk for immediate deportation while their immigration status is being resolved. We invite other congregations and community organizations to develop the QC Sanctuary Coalition with us.
The purposes of the coalition will be to:
broaden awareness of the availability of sanctuary at the UUCQC
provide support for the sanctuary efforts of the congregation with donations of time, talent, and/or treasure
foster connection to the immigrant community that will help identify potential guest(s) in need of sanctuary
support other local congregations who wish to establish sanctuary
advocate for immigration reform
Becoming a broad-based community coalition will make our organizations a powerful voice for immigration justice. Quad Cities Interfaith is urging all our member congregations and organizations to join this Iowa Sanctuary Coalition.
Interested groups and volunteers may attend the introductory Sanctuary Coalition event at the UUCQC at 3707 Eastern Ave., Davenport, IA, on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at 10:00 am. If you have questions, please contact Jay Wolin (563)284-2223 or John Dunsheath (563)343-1746.
