Sophia Drewelow '16

Sophia left The Grauer School for Pacific Lutheran University but then transferred to Humboldt State in Northern California two years ago because they had just the degree she was looking for. HSU enabled Sophia to graduate with a degree in Environmental Education and Interpretation. Technically, she is getting a Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Science and Management, but the emphasis is Environmental Education and Interpretation. Sophia plans to work as an Interpretive Park Ranger on public lands as soon she graduates.

Actually, Sophia was supposed to be a Park Ranger this summer in Oregon, but due to COVID the plans shifted a lot. And she's also interested in pursuing a career in Environmental Education, maybe teaching at a school that is outdoors-based or a Waldorf school. "I am so so blessed to have found HSU; it is truly right where I want and need to be. The town of Arcata (where the university is) is a sweet sea-forest-mountain town six miles north of San Francisco and two hours south of Oregon—it's quite desolate, and reminds me of what Encinitas was probably like 60 years ago. And I feel like HSU is an extension of Grauer, which is so magical. The day and overnight field trips that we get to go on are so awesome and rewarding and all my professors have been absolute gems—I don’t know how I got so lucky! Sad to be graduating, but glad I have one more semester of learning from awesome, passionate, and intelligent people." (Clarification, she still has three more classes to take in the Fall but the school let her graduate with her class this Spring. She'll get that official sheet of paper in the Fall.)

Congratulations Sophia.  You make us proud!
