Celebrate Ordinary Miracles

I love the song “Ordinary Miracles” sung by Barbra Streisand. I love the concept of ordinary miracles. We so often find ourselves looking for the grand, illustrious gesture that we often overlook the small, ordinary miracles that happen right in front of our eyes every day. This song, life coaching and learning to express my gratitude daily have raised my

awareness of the ordinary miracles that surround my life every day. I enjoy being more aware. I led far less pleasant a life when I was rushing from appointment to appointment — never taking time to observe or notice what was happening all around me.

When I worked for the school system, I aimed to arrive at work by 7 a.m. I always felt as if I had received a gift if the moon was low in the sky, but high enough for me to watch it as I drove to school. I allowed myself those moments. I was in the car alone. The town was still waking up at 6:50 a.m. Sometimes, I felt like I had the moon all to myself. Unfortunately, I would walk into the environment of the school with a very long “to do” list, and my noticing or observing of ordinary miracles would vanish. I am afraid that while I am more aware these days, I can still be guilty of overlooking the glorious everyday miracles. I would like to take this e-newsletter to celebrate and to share with you some of my favorite ordinary miracles of the past few months. Please feel free to write me back to share a few of your own. Afterward, simply notice if your day got a little lighter. Mine did while writing this article. Some of my ordinary miracles are ...

  • The power of gratitude
  • The people who rescued dogs from Hurricane Sandy
  • The sun that rose today that never rose before
  • The caterpillar that goes through a complete meltdown in a cocoon that he/she created only to emerge and become a beautiful butterfly
  • A volcano and all its power to cause destruction and begin life anew
  • Watching Oscar Pistorius, the South African runner who had both legs amputated, run the 400 meter race in the London Olympics
  • Having a titanium hip and being able to hike, walk and swim with no pain
  • The moon’s brightness, prominence in the sky and regularity of phases
  • The blooming of trees, flowers and all plants
  • Meeting the perfect partner for me at exactly the right time in my life
  • Experiencing the healing of a broken heart
  • The calm that can and does occur when one takes a few moments to breathe deeply and fully
  • The scientifically proven fact that meditation can and does alter our brains
  • All the medicinal herbs of the world that support me
  • Swimming with sea turtles
  • The mere fact that ‘o’opu ‘alamo’o (native to Hawaii goby fish) swims from the ocean and then climbs 442 feet straight up a waterfall in order to spawn
  • Witnessing dolphins playing!
  • Technology that allows us to stay connected to one another
  • Having a complete stranger say a kind and pleasant word to another
  • Climbing Diamondhead with a couple hundred other people at 6 a.m. in order to celebrate the earth and witness the awe-inspiring sunrise
  • Getting to a standing position on a surf board for 5-7 seconds
  • Witnessing a chameleon change colors right before your eyes
  • Witnessing how rain aids in the miraculous growth of plants
  • Witnessing how growth in nature never stops. Even in the driest or what appears to be an unsupportive environment, plants still push, pull and reach for the sky
  • Having a person truly listen to you
  • Witnessing a brilliant rainbow after a shower
  • All the people who go through life changing life for the better in small but significant ways every day!
  • Accepting and loving someone exactly as they are with no need to change or influence them
  • Feeling accepted and loved exactly as I am
  • Plain old-fashioned LOVE
  • Every day is a miracle!

Don’t be shy. Share your miracles with me. At the very least, spend some time every day enjoying, reminiscing and reveling in the ordinary miracles in your own life!

I also want to share some lesser-known organizations that I have found to create ordinary miracles for others on a daily basis.

Zidisha — Zidisha is a nonprofit peer-to-peer microfinance Internet platform that allows people to lend small amounts of money directly to entrepreneurs in developing countries. “Zidisha” is the Swahili word for “grow” or “expand,” as in a business, an investment, or a quality such as freedom or prosperity. Zidisha is the world’s only direct peer-to-peer microlending service to link borrowers and lenders without intermediaries. (Wikipedia)

Seva Foundation — For more than 34 years, Seva has served people around the world who are struggling for health, cultural survival and sustainable communities. “Seva” is a Sanskrit word meaning “selfless service.”

I just wanted to remind you to follow Pendah’s journey on my blog.  http://nancykalina.com/blog
