Welcome to all 2,808 newsletter subscribers!

In this issue: The Semana Santa crowds have started to arrive, but it certainly isn't as busy as past years... or at least not yet. Early last week, local officials started a campaign to clear the sidewalks along main street in Rincon de Guayabitos. The goal is to urbanize the area, as well as to allow more room for people to walk, park and space for wheelchairs. Not only did they get it done quickly, but it appears that business owners are voluntarily complying. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Daylight Saving Time will finally go into effect here in Mexico this coming Sunday, April 5; the US, Canada and the ten northern border municipalities in Mexico already sprung ahead on Sunday, March 8.

To find out what else is happening, read through the information below and take a peek at our Event Calendar

To help plan your upcoming trip or your day in the bay, don't forget to check the current weather conditions on the Official Jaltemba Bay Weather page.

Due to the holiday and the fact that so many of our subscribers are heading north, we are going to skip the April 15th issue (no fooling). So watch for the next issue of the Jaltemba Bay Life Newsletter to arrive in your Inbox on Wednesday, April 29 just in time for your morning coffee. In the meantime, keep an eye on our blog and forum, as we post information, stories and photos there on a regular basis.

Cuastecomate (Calabash Tree) /
Fruit Used to Make Huichol Maracas

by Allyson Williams

I have always been enamored by the native Huichol Indian artwork sold here in Nayarit, Mexico – from the intricately beaded jewelry and masks, to the colorful yarn paintings. I have purchased several pieces over the years and display them throughout our home. Many years ago, I met a lovely old Huichol woman who was selling handmade purses, dolls, beaded jewelry, carved maracas and some beaded gourd bowls.  Read More
We've also included two articles below about the legacy of the Huichol Indians
and a glossary of the symbols used in their artwork.

We never know who's going to come visit the Hilltop Refugio in La Peñita these days. Recently, a boy brought a rooster to us after hearing that we accepted rescues. The Legacy of the Huichol Culture

by Riviera Nayarit CVB

Mexico is rich with indigenous cultures – over 60, in fact. Among them are the Huichol, which live in our state of Nayarit as well as Jalisco, Zacatecas and Durango, the latter two with minority populations. The Huichol are also known as the Wixaritari and they live in the Nayar and Yesca regions of our State. They are characterized by their colorful and beautifully designed costumes, all of which have a religious significance.  Read More

Glossary of Huichol Symbols

by Susana Valadez

For the Huichol people, art is a means of encoding and channeling sacred knowledge. It is considered a form of prayer, providing direct communion with the sacred realm.

The Huichol use beads, yarn and wood in their imaginative work, creating elegant beaded jewelry, spiritual masks, votive bowls known as rukuri and animal figures. Every item carries heavily symbolic, esoteric and beautifully rendered symbols. There are several prominent symbols featured in Huichol art.  Read More
