Like Paddling Into the Sunset, Jasmine Hohenstein has departed for the cold country for now.
Thank you for all the photos Jas.

This is a special note to all of our readers and clients.  Back in December, we experienced a barrage of hackers and experienced a time period when the ExploreNayarit website was mostly inaccessible by readers desiring to book rentals.

I want to take this opportunity to apologize for any inconvenience or difficulty you may have experienced in contacting the rentals on this site. Everything is back to normal, so please give another try to contact your favorite rentals that were unable to receive or respond to your inquiries during that time.

Welcome to all 3761 newsletter subscribers!  I hope that some of you enjoy watching the numbers grow, as much as I enjoy sharing them with you.

The Easter holidays are over and for the most part, the crowds have subsided, but not ended. The buses are still rolling in and the beaches are still pretty well populated. Our mostly serene beaches are getting more and more popular. As sad as it is to report, I heard of 4 drownings and many rescues. If someone can correct me on that number, please do.

All fundraising functions have come to a a screeching halt. There will be the announcements of upcoming events for next season as dates are firmed up and I am given notice of them.

Note:  As a community service, we at Explore Nayarit promote all charity fundraisers for free. So if you have a charity event you want to publicize, send me the particulars and we will help you get the word out.

To find out what else is happening, read through the information below and take a peek at our online calendar.

Photographers and Writers: I sure could use some stories to share with our readers. Some of you sent in stories in the past that never made it to the newsletter, as they got lost in the upgrading process. We hope that you will not be discouraged and will again share with us your experiences here in the bay and beyond. I am sharing one of my recent endeavors later on in this newsletter. I hope you will enjoy reading my short report..

Click here to learn how to submit photos and articles.

To help plan your upcoming trip or your day in the bay, don't forget to check the current weather conditions on our weather page.

Watch for the next issue of the Explore Nayarit Newsletter to arrive in your Inbox some day soon, but nonetheless just in time for your morning coffee.

In the meantime, keep an eye on our blog, event calendar and forum, as articles and photos are posted there on a regular basis.

Saludos!

It's Hummingbird Migration Time

And boy are they in for a surprise when they get to the US. Hopefully most of the snow will be gone before their arrival.

I have found some interesting information about these tiny creatures that I hope you will find interesting too.

Gay Pride's Celebration

Puerto Vallarta Gay Pride will have its annual parade on May 24th, to celebrate the city's 100th anniversary. The week long celebration continues from May 20th to the 27th.

Guayafest 2018 is up next!

You do not want to miss this fun Volkswagen extravaganza. It will be held, mostly, in the Guayabitos public plaza.

But if you have been there before, you know that it spills onto the streets of town. And the revelers pretty much take over Guayabitos for those 2 days. Watch for traffic delays and detours.

These folks put a lot of TLC into their VWs, as well as a lot of pesos. They are a proud bunch. Go out to see them . Admission is FREE.

Pemex Is Getting Hit On the Sea Too

Pemex's oil platforms in the gulf are also subject to oil theft. These criminals are labeled pirates. They get on board platforms via their small "fishing" boats and do damage, like cutting power lines and removing everything from engines, pumps, copper tubing and wiring, to robberies of employees and their personal belongings and cash. Computers and communications equipment are also targeted.  Needless to say, this disrupts oil production and is causing untold delays and expenses.

The Jaltemba Equine Education Project (J.E.E.P.) will hold their 2019 annual fundraiser, as always, on January 23rd.

Watch here for further details of this great fun event.

Be sure to check out their newly constructed Sarah Jane Walker Dog Park and the newly christened Beach Dogs grooming station, designed and donated by Melanie Blair.

Find the J.E.E.P. website here.
Cancer de Mama Update

Over the next year, many more breast prosthetics will happily be making their own journeys to La Penita - in time for the 2019 Cancer de Mama Clinic on February 1st, 2nd and 3rd!

We have two Cancer de Mama stories to share with you today and encourage you to read them both.

The first is the followup to this year's clinic and can be found here.

The second is called the Journey of a Prosthetic, written by Liana Gallant, and can be found here.

Short Takes...
Pipeline theft is on the increase, but so then is the closing of filling stations caught selling 'hot' gasoline. A report by a state security coordination group explained that 2,002 operations against fuel thieves, were carried out during 2017, resulting in 781 arrests, the seizure of 3,138 vehicles, the disabling of 1,138 illegal pipeline taps and the recovery of six million liters of stolen fuel.

In a followup poll regarding the fake tequila article, initial results indicate that most people (76%) think there is nothing much to be done about the "fake" tequilas and the issue will continue.

22,800 Sea turtle eggs were confiscated during a routine traffic stop of a vehicle on the way to Juchitán, Oaxaca. The driver was driving erratically, which prompted the stop. The driver is being held for crimes against wildlife and animal species, according to the news source Milenio. This reportedly the largest turtle egg confiscation ever in Mexico.

The Tijuana chapter of the Mexican Chamber of Commerce has proposed this landmark be erected on the slopes of Colorado Hill to bring some love back to the city and promote tourism.

IEnova, a subsidiary of the US company, Siempra Energy, is constructing a $130 million US fuel terminal in Ensenada. Once completed in 2020, the terminal will help supply gas and diesel to Baja California.

The USS San Diego arrived at the Marine base in Puerto Vallarta on April 6th. She just completed a 7 month deployment and the crew is spending time with the Mexican Naval crews and are doing other public services while here.

Another liquor related story...  Whiskey is gaining ground against tequila, but after reading about the increase, the story went on to note that the increase included all types of whiskey, bourbons, malts, blends and scotches. Drink more tequila and support our hosts.

Silver production in Mexico continues to increase and again Mexico for the 8th year in a row has ranked number 1 in the world for its silver production with a total of 196.4 million ounces extracted in 2017. The average price per ounce in 2017 was $18.56 US.

Sad News for David's Restaurant. Someone, unknown, torched the 22 year old establishment this morning (Tuesday). It looks to be an almost total loss to David, Nena and Carmen.

Turning Used Tires Into Pesos

The Alvarez family from the state of Mexico are creating uses for those discarded tires. They started out 40 years ago turning the used tires into shoes and huaraches.

Now, through increased technology, they have also developed a way to pulverize the tires into fine dust to use to make aclyic-based weatherproofing coatings.

Read more about this family by following this link.

Big Thank You  to everyone that's feeding me with your wonderful photos and stories.  Please send more as my inventory is running very low, so if you have some photos or stories you would like to share, please send them in for future issues of this newsletter. Smile!

Reader's Reviews

Did you enjoy a great meal, find a great deal or get great service? Why not take a few minutes to write a recommendation for your favorite places to help other locals and visitors in their trip planning and research. Here's what people are saying..

Hamaca Maya
This is your one stop shop for the largest and most beautiful selection of hammocks in all of Mexico. Don't bother wasting time elsewhere. If you're looking for a hammock-THIS is the place. If you're looking for a lame Tshirt or trinket that can be found anywhere else in Mexico, then move on. If you want unique and fun take home prezzies for friends, family and yourself... then don't miss this amazing little gem in La Penita. And the bonus is the owner is as colourful and vibrant as the cool stuff she carries. We love it and never miss an opportunity to check it out when we're there. Absolutely FIVE star worthy.
Great

Buhardilla Restaurant - Guayabitos
My wife and I ate here Saturday night Feb 10, and it was great. Our table wasn't the best but I was late making the reservation and it was the only table for 2 left so you take what you can get. My wife had the raviolis and they were excellent although a very small serving. If it would have been me who ordered them I would have been left hungry and upset. For her, it was barely enough and she ate several pieces of the delicious bread they served with the meal to fill up. I had the fettuchini carbonarra and it was delicious and almost more than I could eat. The sauce was excellent and the pasta was cooked to perfection. Service was prompt and courteous from a waitress who spoke perfect English, and prices were certainly not out of line. All in all a very enjoyable evening!   Murray Dryburgh
Great

Centro Medico La Peñita (Dr. Martín Nuñez Arciniega) - La Penita
Would highly recommend this medical office. My wife uses the lab to monitor a pre-diabetic condition with consultation from both physicians. We are fortunate to have this facility available with such excellent concern & care. Would encourage all expats to give them a try when medical assistance is needed. Robert K King
Great
Beautiful place I had a great time with my friends we enjoyed the happy hour at the bar.
Great

We had gone before, but we had not found the place open. When he told Sofia, he told us that it was because they had volunteered at one of the events to sterilize dogs. We ordered a latte and a mocha, both were delicious, excellent coffee and prepared with great care. Both the hosts and the diners give this place a sense of warmth that made us feel right at home right away. One of the best places to enjoy excellent coffee in La Penita    Alejandro Zedillo Rojas
