Your bi-weekly news from Nayarit, Mexico

March 1, 2018

Totally with prejudice, I am posting this photo of Taco, who is finally resting comfortably.
Welcome to all 3765 newsletter subscribers!  I hope that some of you enjoy watching the numbers grow, as much as I enjoy sharing them with you.

This is going to be the most abbreviated Explore Nayarit Newsletters so far. Hopefully, not to bore you with a personal story, but so many people requested to know more, so here is a summary of what happened.

In case you didn't hear, my little rescue dog, "Taco", was lost for four days this past week in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. My searching and ultimate rescue, left me with very little time to do my normal research for the newsletter. For that I apologize, but along with that comes the good news that I found him and he is back home, quite a lot the worse for wear though. He lost some weight and received many cuts and abrasions to his legs.

He and I are very lucky to have God working on our side because when I found him he was so weak, he couldn't even stand up. He had just spent 4 days and 3 nights trapped in a terrible position, without water or food, and in the sun. To make matters worse, after rescuing him, I took a little tumble on the hillside and probably look worse than he does. We are blessed to be reunited and I surely do not want to go through that again. I get half my stitches out today.

Thank you all for allowing me to post my happy ending. Yes, there is a lot more to the story I will not bore you with.

For the most part, this will be a dog issue. A couple of my faithful readers wrote a very nice story about their pooch, Amarillo. And another wrote  a  cute story I am sharing in this issue. And I am still searching for any other short news items that may be of interest to ya'all.

Note:  As a community service, we at Explore Nayarit promote all charity fundraisers for free. So if you have a charity event you want to publicize, send me the particulars and we will help you get the word out.

To find out what else is happening, read through the information below and take a peek at our online calendar, which is also back in operation now.

Photographers and Writers: I sure could use some stories to share with our readers. Some of you sent in stories in the past that never made it to the newsletter, as they got lost in the upgrading process. We hope that you will not be discouraged and will again share with us your experiences here in the bay and beyond. I am sharing one of my recent endeavors later on in this newsletter. I hope you will enjoy reading my short report..

Click here to learn how to submit photos and articles.

To help plan your upcoming trip or your day in the bay, don't forget to check the current weather conditions on our weather page.

Watch for the next issue of the Explore Nayarit Newsletter to arrive in your Inbox some day soon, but nonetheless just in time for your morning coffee.

In the meantime, keep an eye on our blog, event calendar and forum, as articles and photos are posted there on a regular basis.

Saludos!

A Short Story About a Rescued Dog from JBAR That Left His Mark in a Lot of Places.
by Anne and Dave Easby

Amarillo’s Story It was in the winter of 2006 when he first came into our lives. Some folks from Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue had approached us to foster a dog for two weeks as he recovered from his operation at the spay and neuter clinic. They needed someone to care for him before they sent him off to Canada where they were hoping to find him a forever home. Please click here for the rest of the story.

The Musings of Bagger Dave

‘Esposas’. Scottish Wife and amiga Mickey on their early morning stroll.
I love the fact that esposas means ‘handcuffs’ in Spanish as well as ‘wives’.

Well, it’s our last full day in Guayabitos so it’s not surprising that I’m thinking about the four weeks we’ve spent here – and ... And if you want to read the rest of the story, click here.

This is very important to all visitors with Residente Permanente or Residente Temporal Resident Cards

Obtaining a Mexican resident card is not a simple one day task; rather, it is a multi-step process that begins at a Mexican Consulate in your home country and ends (sometimes months later) when you finally pick up your resident card at an immigration office in Mexico. Continued here

Bungalos D’Carlin in Guayabitos, Is In the News Again

A Valentine’s Dinner and Dance is held each year at Bungalos D’Carlin in Rincon de Guayabitos.

This year dinner was catered by the students of the Gastronomic Program of the Conalep Technical School in LaPenita. The delicious entres included a choice of stuffed chicken breast, bbq ribs or dorado fish stuffed with shrimp. These were accompanied bt salad and dessert. The students of this program are very capable of providing meals to suit any occasion.
From the proceeds of the dinner 6 students in the school were awarded scholarships. The students were chosen by their teachers because of their grades, determination and financial need. Without this help they would not be able to graduate from the Conalep School. Several are determined to go on to University. They are working part time jobs and learning English when not in school.

This group of Canadian tourists and the hotel owners will continue to provide help to the school when they can.
Short Takes...
Happy Ending for a Grey Whale that was found beached on shore along the coast of Baja. The whale left stranded after being caught by the ebbing tide has just made it back to the sea, apparently none the worse for wear. Workers spent 3 days using pumps and hoses to keep it hydrated. The endangered mammal was able to swim on its own back into the ocean after being repositioned by the workers..
Dead People, 17,674 of them collected welfare payments of one form or another in 2016, a recent audit showed. Most of which received pension payments. I don't know about the rest of you, but this sounds vaguely familiar to occurrences NOTB.
Jiminalta and I took an investigative journey to see just exactly how the new highway was coming along. We did this because of the latest touting by some government officials saying that it is almost complete. If you are interested in viewing a bunch of photos of the unfinished roadway and some related rhetoric, go to the Jaltemba Bay folk forum at http://jaltemba-bay-mexico.com and scroll down to the topic that begins with "Well don't hold your breath...."

Reader's Reviews

Did you enjoy a great meal, find a great deal or get great service? Why not take a few minutes to write a recommendation for your favorite places to help other locals and visitors in their trip planning and research. Here's what people are saying..

Buhardilla Restaurant - Guayabitos
My wife and I ate here Saturday night Feb 10, and it was great. Our table wasn't the best but I was late making the reservation and it was the only table for 2 left so you take what you can get. My wife had the raviolis and they were excellent although a very small serving. If it would have been me who ordered them I would have been left hungry and upset. For her, it was barely enough and she ate several pieces of the delicious bread they served with the meal to fill up. I had the fettuchini carbonarra and it was delicious and almost more than I could eat. The sauce was excellent and the pasta was cooked to perfection. Service was prompt and courteous from a waitress who spoke perfect English, and prices were certainly not out of line. All in all a very enjoyable evening!   Murray Dryburgh
Great

Centro Medico La Peñita (Dr. Martín Nuñez Arciniega) - La Penita
Would highly recommend this medical office. My wife uses the lab to monitor a pre-diabetic condition with consultation from both physicians. We are fortunate to have this facility available with such excellent concern & care. Would encourage all expats to give them a try when medical assistance is needed. Robert K King
Great
Beautiful place I had a great time with my friends we enjoyed the happy hour at the bar.
Great

We had gone before, but we had not found the place open. When he told Sofia, he told us that it was because they had volunteered at one of the events to sterilize dogs. We ordered a latte and a mocha, both were delicious, excellent coffee and prepared with great care. Both the hosts and the diners give this place a sense of warmth that made us feel right at home right away. One of the best places to enjoy excellent coffee in La Penita    Alejandro Zedillo Rojas
Great

We were in Rincon de Guayabitos for Spring Break this year to visit friends who spend the winter there each year. La Pina Loca became our 'go to' place to eat. The service and food are excellent and I can't recommend this restaurant enough.
