HCC opens two newly
renovated buildings

In January, HCC completed its Arts & Sciences Complex with the renovation of two existing instructional buildings: The Classroom Building and the former Science Building, both of which were originally constructed in 1966. The renovated buildings were each given new names to illustrate their new and expanded functions. The Classroom Building was renamed the Behavioral Sciences and Humanities Building and the former Science Building was renamed the Learning Support Center.

Enrollment
Soars at HCC

HCC had the highest percentage increase in fall enrollment of the 16 community colleges in Maryland. HCC’s enrollment grew by 6.8 percent to a total of 5,034 credit students for the fall 2012 semester, when compared to the fall 2011 semester.

MLK Diversity Celebration

HCC held its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Diversity Celebration on Jan. 21, in HCC’s Kepler Center. This year marked the tenth anniversary of the event, which draws a large number of community members each year.

Spring Grants Update

In the first half of the fiscal year, HCC secured $1.5 million dollars in grant funds. The most notable grants include a $650,000 grant for biotechnology and microscopy through the National Science Foundation and a $75,000 grant for the college's truck driving program through the U.S. Department of Transportation.

New Police Academy

HCC will soon offer a twice-yearly police academy, designed to prepare cadets to serve as officers/deputies in county and municipal police and sheriff departments. Former Gaithersburg Chief of Police John King has been hired as director.

HCC and First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR), a leading provider of photovoltaic (PV) solar system solutions, today announced the start of collaborative initiatives for faculty and students in HCC’s alternative energy  program.

In fall 2012, HCC welcomed 14 new, full-time faculty members to its staff. The HCC Foundation will hold its annual Tribute Dinner. This year's honoree is community philanthropist  Howard "Blackie" Bowen.

HCC's Robinwood Players will perform "Cabaret" in the Kepler Center.
