Letter from the President

Dear Chapter Members,

The New York City Chapter of IFMA has had a tremendous year thus far and is proud to continue the momentum with a full calendar of exciting new programs and initiatives.

April was very productive for the Chapter leadership who attended Facility Fusion in Washington D.C. The IFMA Cares committee held a very successful fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, raising $6,000 and we held our first career services event of the year at Pratt Institute.

We are gearing up for our May programming with an “E-Recycling Panel Discussion” from our sustainability committee. This is sure to be an informative program and is another example of the initiatives our sustainability committee is implementing to bring value to our members. The Chapter leadership will also be hosting a sponsor appreciation event as we celebrate their contribution to the chapter as many of our programs and initiatives would not be possible without them.

Save the Date for our Annual Golf Outing on Monday, October 6, 2014 at Harbor Links Golf Course. As always, I encourage you to check our website or the App for a full schedule of upcoming events.

I would like to extend my most sincere gratitude to our members and sponsors for your ongoing efforts and relentless enthusiasm toward our goal of maintaining the IFMA New York City Chapter as the premier organization for Facility Managers and Professionals in the New York Metropolitan Area.

Gary Anzalone

Committee Highlights

The 2014-2015 sponsorship drive is in full swing. As many of our current sponsors will tell you, sponsoring the New York City Chapter provides additional exposure for organizations, opens new doors for networking opportunities, and complimentary access to monthly programs and special events throughout the year.

IFMA NYC has multiple sponsorship levels available and all information is available on our website The deadline for sponsorship registration is June 30, 2014. Feel free to contact either of our Sponsorship Committee Chair people with any questions or comments regarding sponsorship - Kelley Douglass or Marianne Scott.

Emerging Leaders/Young Professionals

The Emerging Leaders Committee officially launched their mentoring program and have collected a good number of mentees, but are currently seeking more mentors to pair them with. This is a great opportunity for FMs to gain valuable leadership and communication skills, while giving back to the Facility Management community, and any IFMA, BOMA or CoreNet member is eligible to become a mentor.

The program is free for members and will kick off with a mixer event, where mentees and mentors will be able to “interview” each other and pair up with whom they think most fit their needs and schedules.

Recommended activities for mentorship include:

  • Meetings over coffee or lunch
  • Attending an educational session or conference proceeding together
  • Attending an IFMA organized social or networking event together
  • Attending a site visit on a project your mentor is working on
  • Spending an afternoon shadowing your mentor in their workplace

Mentors can sign up for the program here and mentees can sign up here.

The Emerging leaders committee is planning a networking event and cocktail hour on Friday, June 13 that will mark the closing of the International Facility and Real Estate Management Life-Cycle Planning Workshop and Conference. It will take place at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher (a space generously donated by Chris Mee, a former chair).

Committee members visited graduate student classes to promote the scholarship and competition sponsored by the IFMA Foundation. The scholarship and competition projects are open to all enrolled student members, the deadline for applications and competition projects are due on Tuesday, May 20 and awards will be announced at World Workplace in New Orleans in September.

A Committee member attended Facility Fusion last week where the main theme was reaching out to the "new" generation of facility managers. The IFMA Foundation is creating an outreach program to high school students in the area, specifically targeting STEM schools.

The IFMA NYC chapter is planning a fundraising event on Thursday, August 14 and the committee is planning a silent auction. If you’re interested in donating please contact Daniel Castner or J. Strong.

The IFMA NYC Sustainability Committee is presenting a panel discussion on Thursday, May 22 from 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM focusing on e-waste recycling and the new 2015 mandates for electronic waste disposal. Panelists include:

David Hirschler, Director, Waste Prevention Unit, NYC Department of Sanitation
Lauren Roman, Managing Director, TransparentPlanet
Hai Ngo, MBA, MS, Chief Information Security Officer, NYU Langone Medical Center

The panel will be moderated by Rodney Clara, Off-Site Enterprise IT Asset and Disposition Services Manager, HUGO NEURecycling
