AVCLP 2014-15 Program commences

The 2014 -15 Alpine Valleys Community Leadership Program kicked off on 25th and 26th July, with its Opening Retreat.  Held at the Lake Hume Resort, Albury, AVCLP welcomed 23 participants to this year’s program.  The participants have been recruited from all parts of the region, including Mansfield and Benalla in the west, and Cudgewa (near Corryong) in the east.  AVCLP Board member, Lisbeth Long, addressed the group on behalf of the Board, and four of last year’s graduates spoke to the participants about the impact that AVCLP had made on them.

The group’s first Program day will be held on Friday 8th August, and the program will conclude with Graduation on the 21st May 2015.  Topics that the group will examine this year include: young people, land use planning and agriculture, and culture and diversity. The Board and staff wish all this year’s participants all the best as they complete their leadership journey over the coming ten months.

AVCLP Bug Blitz - Frog Bog Project

AVCLP has received funding for the next 3 years from the Hugh Williamson Foundation to focus on environmental and arts projects in our local communities.

For this year's project, AVCLP partnered with the North East Catchment Management Authority and St. Joseph's Primary School Beechworth's Sustainability Committee.

An unsightly overgrown open table drain that runs into Spring Creek, Beechworth was identified as an area in need of improvement.
Planting days with the community and school children developed the site and the land has been transformed into a wetland of specialised frog bog pools that will provide important habitat for a wide range of native flora, fauna and macro invertebrates.
The Frog Bog will also serve as an excellent outdoor classroom for students to learn about biodiversity, whilst also providing a practical environmental ecosystem service by filtering stormwater running off the street before it reaches Spring Creek.

AVCLP Community Landcare Leadership Program

A seven session leadership program, specifically designed by AVCLP for participants from the Landcare and Natural Resource Management Sector, has recently concluded.

19 participants from across North East Victoria completed the program which included sessions on leadership theory, decision making, leading change, resilience, community development and communication skills.

A case study of the successful Holbrook Landcare Network was the focus of a two day field trip to Holbrook during which the program participants were able to hear from guest speakers and visit current Landcare project sites.
