May Beer Festivals

Summer Beer Festival season is almost here and what could be finer than the opportunity to sample a selection of quality craft ales at a traditional country pub in some spring sunshine?

Regardless of what the weather decides to do, kicking the season off is The Viper at Mill Green, Ingatestone. The pub hosts its annual May Day Beer Festival over the first May bank holiday weekend, 29th April - 2nd May.  With more than 50 real ales plus traditional ciders and perries it is always a popular festival.  The Viper opens all day during the festival and food is available throughout.  A programme of live music is planned too.  'Real ales, real food and real pub' says The Viper.

Next up is The Chequers, Billericay with their beer festival running over the weekend of 6th - 8th May.  A hog roast is available in the daytime and in the evening there will be a selection of tempting curries.  A programme of entertainment is organised with music from live bands.  There will be up to 40 different beers to try.  The event will be raising money for charity Help for Heroes.  Friday and Saturday the festival runs noon to midnight and on Sunday noon to 11pm.

Over the second bank holiday weekend in May there are two  festival options to choose from as The White Horse Coxtie Green and The Hoop in Stock are each hosting beer festivals.

The White Horse has organised an impressive line up of free musical entertainment over their four-day beer festival which runs 27th - 30th May.  The White Horse team will be fund  raising  for charity.  A huge selection of real ales will be on offer.

The Hoop in Stock has been running its annual beer festival for more than two decades, drawing in beer lovers from afar away as Norway and Australia.  With more than 100 real ales, 80 plus ciders including scrumpy and perry, a hog roast and a BBQ,  it has grown in popularity to become one of the premier beer festivals in the county.  The festival starts at noon each day.  Will they beat their record, set 11 years ago, of selling 18000 pints?

Rest assured, Brentwood Beer will be available at all these local  beer festivals.

Brentwood Festival 2016

This year's nominated festival charity has been confirmed as Blesma, an Essex-based charity which supports military amputees and their families.  See www.blesma.org.

Some serious brewing gets underway at Brentwood Brewery this month, perfecting the special Festival brew we're creating for this year's Brentwood Festival in July.  Although the recipe is not yet finalised, it is likely to be a golden-coloured beer using Cascade hops which can give the ale a fruity flavour.  Full tasting notes and ABV details to follow soon.

Pub of the Month
The Willow,
Doddinghurst

The warm welcome you get at The Willow in Doddinghurst is largely due to the vivacious family team that operates this friendly, village pub. Owned by friends Robert Barr and Martin Broom, the pub is managed by Martin’s sister in law, Sam Emanuel with assistance from Sam’s sister, Viv Broom. Most of the staff are relatives or friends too.

“We’re a small village pub, popular with all ages, from families with young children to older members of the community. We serve freshly cooked, traditional pub food as well as some creative, contemporary specials at weekends,” said manager Sam.

The pub offers a varied range of wines, ciders and beers including one from Brentwood Brewery, Brentwood IPA 3.7% ABV.

Head chef Artur Rodak, is especially known for his creativity when it comes to inventing the weekend specials menu.

“Artur always comes up with something different. He’s good at experimenting with flavours, particularly ones you wouldn’t necessarily think would go together. But they do,” said Viv.

During the week, The Willow’s Traditional Pub Fayre menu is proving very popular.

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays the restaurant closes but the pub is open for liquid refreshment.

With great beer and a full range of drinks, an extensive menu of freshly cooked, traditional pub food along with their unique specials menu at weekends, the community-spirited Willow truly caters for all ages and tastes.

Beer & Bar Snack Match Suggestion:  A refreshing pint of Brentwood IPA 3.7% ABV (lightly hopped, pale, session bitter) and The Willow’s traditional beer battered fish and chips served with peas and homemade tartar sauce £10.95. Their tasty batter is made with Brentwood IPA.
