Bird’s Engineering Mathematics and Bird’s Basic Engineering Mathematics are established Routledge textbooks, both published in 2021, that have helped thousands of students to succeed in their exams. Mathematical theories are explained straightforwardly, supported by practical engineering examples and applications to ensure that readers can relate theory to practice. Over 1,000 engineering situations/problems in each book have been 'flagged-up' to help demonstrate that engineering cannot be fully understood without a good knowledge of mathematics.

The extensive topic coverage makes this a great text for introductory level engineering courses (Basic Engineering Mathematics) and a range of level 2 and 3 engineering courses (Engineering Mathematics) - such as for aeronautical, construction, electrical, electronic, mechanical, manufacturing engineering and vehicle technology - including for BTEC First, National and Diploma syllabuses, City & Guilds Technician Certificate and Diploma syllabuses, and even for GCSE and A-level revision.
In Bird’s Higher Engineering Mathematics, the theory is kept to a minimum. The emphasis is firmly placed on problem-solving skills, making this a thoroughly practical introduction to the advanced engineering mathematics that students need to master by developing problem-solving skills. It is supported by over 600 practical engineering examples and applications which relate theory to practice. The thorough topic coverage makes this a solid text for undergraduate and upper-level vocational courses.

Mayflower in Britain, August 2020, Amberley

This book offers a unique perspective of the Mayflower's journey, by placing the story in a British context and providing a fresh analysis of why the journey took place. It explores the economic as well as the religious reasons for the journey to strip away the romantic, orthodox view of the Mayflower and offer an illuminating insight into how the journey became a reality. The voyage of the Mayflower has almost always been seen as part of American history and as part of America's struggle for democracy.

Seamanship 2.0: everything you need to know to get yourself out of trouble at sea, March 2021, Bloomsbury

The authors deliver vital information on the core skills of seamanship in an easy-to-read manner, making this book a good corrective to digital dependency.

Divided into four sections – seamanship, problem fixing, emergencies and first aid – it covers a range of practical skills; anchoring, taking a bearing, repairing an LPG leak, dealing with a man overboard, putting out a fire in the engine room and much, much more. The authors also discuss 'soft skills' that can be just as vital, like building a cohesive crew.

Upstream and Offshore Energy Insurance, 3rd edition, February 2021, Witherby
In its third edition, Upstream and Offshore Energy Insurance is a massive tome offered at a price that indicates it is for use in libraries rather than for individual purchases.
However, for seafarers thinking of moving into 'City' jobs ashore, it would be worth laying hands on it somehow, as it offers an introduction to the maritime and energy insurance world as well as being a work of reference for experienced practitioners.
Use the book to delve into the policies and legalities surrounding oil and gas exploration, production and decommissioning – with the challenges of leaks and pollution also to the fore.
