Dear <<First Name>>,

As a kid I often daydreamed about being a grownup. I couldn't wait to have the freedom to go to bed whenever I wanted and eat whatever I wanted. I longed to find out how adult-me would set up life on my own terms, like what kind of bedspread I would choose without the influence of my parents. Those were exciting unknowns.

There were also some adamant knowns, what I would now call values. Do you remember the values you had as a kid, what you knew for sure, unequivocally about how you were going to run your adult life?

One thing I knew for sure: an alarm clock would not be part of it. Another thing I knew: my life could not be boring. Whatever else it was, it had to be interesting and meaningful. Now I see how those values played out in my life, relentlessly sloughing off dead ends. Had I been more conscious of this process, I could have saved myself some painful job experiences!

More to the point when it comes to painting, I've realized that, for me, an abstract painting must be interesting and meaningful. What is meaningful in an abstract painting?

Come, let's explore this intriguing question and the way it guides your paintings in my workshop Meaningful Abstracts (see below).

I bet, at least in some ways, you are living the most important values that, as a child, you chose for your life. Am I right? Give yourself a moment of thanks.

I am grateful that my life is anything but boring as an abstract painter who can share this quest with you.

Yours in the love of beauty and spirit,

P.S. My exhibition "Choose What you Create" is currently on view at Gallery 527 in Jerome, Arizona, through December 29, 2017. See blog for photos and press release. If you're in the area, please come to the Artwalk artist reception on December 2 from 5-8 pm.

P.P.S. I redesigned this Beauty & Spirit Note, along with my website and blog. Hopefully they are lighter-feeling and easier to look at, yes?

P.P.P.P.S. I give you a most heartfelt invitation to paint meaningful abstracts with me on December 1-3 at the Sedona Arts Center. Because of my lazy butt - okay, perfectionistic tendencies - I didn't send this newsletter when I should have. So the earlybird rate for my Meaningful Abstracts workshop is extended until November 26! Check it out below, or get full details here. Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me or reply to this email.

Meaningful Abstracts
Workshop with Julie Bernstein Engelmann
at the Sedona Arts Center, Sedona, Arizona
December 1-3, 2017 (Fri-Sun)

An abstract painting speaks through the way the paint is used. It is a language of personal mark-making, luscious paint, visual depth, and compositional flow. Julie, an award-winning abstract artist, will help you understand and master these essential qualities to create meaningful, powerful abstracts.

Using acrylic, first you will build your painting in layers of delicious color and intuitive form. Then you'll find the special gift, the spirit in your painting. Finally, you will learn to “see” the painting space and gently shape it – into an inspired abstract that is natural and meaningful to you and powerful to others.   Learn More...
